Game of Thrones fans “genuinely angered” Jon Snow actor Kit Harington with their viral petition to remake Season 8, the actor has revealed. Seven years ago, HBO’s fantastical medieval sensation wrapped up an eight-season saga with Bran Stark’s surprise ascension to the throne, overseeing six kingdoms while his sister Sansa took on the mantle of Queen of the North. Jon, meanwhile, was exiled to the Night’s Watch as punishment for murdering Daenerys Targaryen. These outcomes, as well as many others, did not please a large portion of the Thrones fanbase, and they made their feelings heard by campaigning online to get “competent writers” to give it another go.
During an interview with The New York Times, Harington stuck up for David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
“That genuinely angered me. Like, how dare you? Sorry, that’s just how I feel. I think it was a level of idiocy that can only come about through social media.”
This comes after the Industry star buried the idea of appearing in a Thrones sequel series once and for all. “No, God no. I don’t wanna go anywhere near it. I spent 10 years doing that. Thanks, I’m alright,” said Harington.
‘Game of Thrones’ Star “Almost Wanted to Donate” to Infamous Remake Petition
As for Jaime Lannister portrayer Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s thoughts on that infamous petition, he previously admitted to considering a donation to the cause.
“I didn’t follow [the Season 8 fallout] at all. Obviously, I heard about it. I was aware of the petition for a new ending, which I thought was hilarious. I almost wanted to donate to that petition. HBO saying, ‘You’re right, so many people want it, we’re going to do it.’ I think everyone had their own opinion. I find the world of fandom really interesting. Everyone wanted something specific and different from what they got.
“It’s a combination of — you imagine an ending; but also, I think if you’re a hardcore fan, it was really upsetting that it ended. You lived with this for eight seasons. There is still a massive community dedicated to Game of Thrones. I think there was a real fear that was going to go away. It had to end.”
Asked about the series finale itself, which was watched by 12 million pairs of eyes on the day it premiered on HBO, the Danish actor went on to add: “It comes to an end, it’s gonna p*** you off no matter what because it’s the end. If you hated the ending, if you loved the ending, that’s great. Just don’t call people names. It was great. It was fine. How do you end that story? Let’s talk about this in 10 years, then you can talk about it. But now, I think it’s a little too recent.”
Meanwhile, Hodor’s Kristian Nairn once told Screen Rant that the fan reaction “disappointed” him.
“It’s not perfect, no. But also keep in mind I’m not a scriptwriter, neither are 99.99% of people… So [the response] disappointed me really. I don’t feel responsible for it obviously, because I was long since dead… Although people say that Daenerys acted out of character and stuff and so quickly, but I just don’t understand how they didn’t see that throughout the show. I was waiting for it to happen the whole way. The signs were there guys.”
