Kevin Feige Teases Return of Lost MCU Characters and Unfortunate Future for Fan-Favorite Spider-Man

Kevin Feige provides a disappointing update on fan-favorite Spider-Man character Miles Morales’ chances of joining the MCU and talks about all those previously teased characters eventually returning. Marvel Studios is building towards Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, a two-part finale that will bring in a wide array of characters, including various members of The Avengers, Thunderbolts, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. Yet, there are plenty of other characters that Marvel Studios has teased in post-credit scenes, including Clea (Charlize Theron) in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Starfox (Harry Styles) in Eternals, and Hercules (Brett Goldstein) in Thor: Love & Thunder, which seemingly have no confirmed return date.

Speaking with the press about the future of the MCU, Feige outlined some future plans for the MCU, as well as what characters can or will return. One name fans shouldn’t hold out much hope for is Miles Morales / Spider-Man, as Variety reports. When asked where fans can expect to see Miles Morales, Feige said, “That is nowhere.” It appears that due to the animated Spider-Verse films, Marvel Studios is blocked from introducing a live-action version of the fan-favorite web-slinger, as Sony Pictures has the rights to the character. Feige said, “We’ve been told to stay away.”

Even though the Eternals are sitting out ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ the superhero team could be involved in the rumored Mutant Saga.

Feige was also asked about the possible return of characters teased in post-credits scenes, as well as the future of Sacha Baron Cohen’s role as Mephisto from Ironheart. Feige playfully responded with “Do you want to see them again” before following up with mentioning how long it took for Tim Blake Nelson to return as Samuel Sterns / The Leader in the MCU. “That is fun to me. So let’s talk again in 12 years and see who comes back.”

Where in the MCU Are Clea, Hercules, Starfox, and Mephisto?

Despite Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Homecoming featuring a small reference to Miles Morales when Aaron Davis (Donald Glover) mentions his nephew, it appears that Peter Parker will remain the MCU’s Spider-Man for some time. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was just recently delayed until June 25, 2027, the same year that Avengers: Secret Wars is set to hit theaters and seemingly reset the MCU timeline. That means Miles Morales could join the MCU after the events of those films, and given the multiverse nature of the Spider-Verse trilogy, might secretly tie in with the Multiverse Saga plot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, don’t expect to see Miles Morales in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Feige’s comments about the future of characters like Clea, Hercules, Starfox, and Mephisto certainly speak to a frustration Marvel fans have had with the franchise since Avengers: Endgame. In the Infinity Saga, when a character was teased in a post-credit scene, there was a guarantee that they would appear in a future film, building excitement between projects. Yet the teases of these obscure Marvel characters in post-credit scenes during the Multiverse Saga feel like cheap ways to replicate the reveal of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury in Iron Man or Thanos at the end of The Avengers, but with no indication of when they will return. They feel like empty promises as opposed to enticing teases.

Clea and Hercules seemingly were set-ups for Doctor Strange 3 and Thor 5, respectively, yet those films haven’t been confirmed. Mephisto could appear in any MCU title, and hopefully, this will lead to a Midnight Sons crossover. The entire Eternals franchise remains a question mark, but Feige has hinted that after the Multiverse Saga, the characters could return, providing a possible return for Starfox. With Captain America: Brave New World reintroducing both the Leader and the Celestial island from Eternals, it indicates that the MCU will eventually revisit plot points and tease characters years after introducing them, with the question being when and how.
