Kevin Durand Reveals Why ‘X-Men’ Character The Blob Did Not Appear in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’g Left Out of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Actor Kevin Durand

reveals why he didn’t reprise his role as The Blob in Deadpool & Wolverine. Durand is an accomplished character actor, having appeared in a wide variety of projects, including The Strain and Swamp Thing, with 2024 being a notable year for the actor as he appeared in both the horror film Abigail and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as the main villain, Proximus Casear. One 2024 film Durand did not appear in, though, was Deadpool & Wolverine, even though the actor appeared alongside both Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds in X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2009.

Everything We Know About the MCU X-Men Movie

Everyone’s favorite mutants are set to make their MCU debut and here’s everything we know about it.

Speaking with Comic Book Movie to promote his latest film, Clown in a Cornfield, Durand revealed why he did not return as Freed Dukes / The Blob for the third Deadpool film. While The Blob does appear in Deadpool & Wolverine, it is Mike Waters in a non-speaking role. The actor said of his absence:

“You know, Hugh Jackman kept saying to me while we were shooting that scene in the ring, ‘Oh my God, they’re gonna go crazy for this character. Get used to doing this makeup process.’ It never came back around. The word that I heard was just that it was a very time-consuming character. It would take seven and a half hours to get fully into the makeup and the layers of costuming and whatnot. I can’t help but think it ended up being about time constraints, but hopefully, someone in that universe brings him back because he’s a terrific character. I would love to get under all those layers to explore Freddy Dukes again.”

Will The Blob Return?

Durand was not the only former Marvel villain actor who did not reprise his role for Deadpool & Wolverine. Despite Cassandra Nova’s army featuring various villains from past 20th Century Fox films, the only actors to reprise their roles are Aaron Stanford as Pyro and Tyler Mane as Sabretooth. Toad, Lady Deathstrike, Azazel, Juggernaut, and Bullseye are all played by new actors, suggesting these are multiversal variants.

Many past actors from the X-Men film franchise are set to return in Avengers: Doomsday, including X-Men villains such as Ian McKellen as Magneto and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique. While that could theoretically open the door for Durand to return as The Blob, possibly on the same Brotherhood of Mutants team as Mystique, like in the X-Men comics, The Blob appearing in an MCU film seems unlikely.

The Blob might not be the most popular X-Men villain, but he does have a long, storied history in the comics. One of the original X-Men foes, The Blob was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared in X-Men #3 in 1964. With the X-Men set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a reboot, The Blob would be a great addition to the roster of villains. In the Ultimate Comics, The Blob is the father of the mutant Firestar, who is the character many expect to see Sadie Sink play in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Durand could play the official MCU version of The Blob, and give the character some more gravitas than he was given in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which essentially treated him as a joke.
