Ken Jeong Gives Optimistic Update on Delayed ‘Community’ Movie

How long have Community fans been saying “Six seasons and a movie” for? The beloved sitcom, created by Dan Harmon, ran for six seasons between 2009 and 2015. Following the show’s finale, fans have been taking to the virtual streets, campaigning for Abed’s dream to come true. That dream was answered in 2022 when the Community movie was, finally, officially announced. However, fans have again grown doubtful, as progress has been immensely slow. Thankfully, Senior Chang himself, Ken Jeong, is here to give fans a much-needed boost of hope.

During a recent interview with TV Insider to promote the series Accused, Jeong delivered some good news about the long-delayed Community movie. Jeong confirmed that the script has been completed, and the cast is now just waiting for the production to move onto the next stage.

“There is a script, there is a plan,” Jeong said. “We just don’t know when [it will happen]. Once that’s agreed upon, it’ll be magical and real emotional.” Jeong confirmed that he’s read the script, and teased that fans are in for a nostalgic treat. He continued:

“I think being on set experiencing that again [will be] so gratifying. Words can’t even express. It is funny. I got to meet one of my best friends, Joel McHale, because of that [show]. It made me emotional, and just brought me right back, and that’s all I’m legally allowed to say.”

Ken Jeong appeared in the very first episode of Community as Ben Chang, Greendale Community College’s Spanish teacher, also known as El Tigre, Chino, Sgt. Chang, Overkill, and Brutalitops the Magician, and was a frequent returning star across its six seasons. However, Chang had been faking his credentials, and was forced to enroll as a student at Greendale, where he became an on-and-off member of the study group.

Alongside Jeong, Community also starred Joel McHale, Dani Pudi, Donald Glover, Alison Brie, Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Jim Rash, and Chevy Chase. The entire cast is confirmed to return for the new movie, excluding Chevy Chase, who departed from the show in Season 5 following growing tensions with Dan Harmon.

Jeong’s update comes as a much-needed dose of good news considering the recent string of reports about the Community movie. In October, it was announced that Community had been delayed yet again. Yvette Nicole Brown, who plays Shirley in the series, addressed the delays in an interview, but confirmed that the movie is still “going to happen.” She then explained to fans that the delays are a result of the film being “reworked.” She said:

“I think it’s being reworked, but we all have read an entire, full script. So a script exists.”

The Community Movie Gets Its Release Schedule Teased by Joel McHale

Joel McHale says he’s “excited” for the Community movie, and offers a timeline update.

The actress continued, saying that the “reworking” is a result of the stars’ schedules. After departing Community in 2015, each of its core cast has gone on to have immensely successful careers in the entertainment industry. As a result, getting seven A-listers’ schedules to match is a tall task. Brown explained:

“It’s just now trying to get all these puzzle pieces together of everybody’s schedule. We were scheduled to do it, and then the strike happened. And now it’s like trying to figure out when is so-and-so done with their show?”
