Every year around this time, for nigh on twenty years now, the question has come up: will Nancy Meyers‘ Christmas classic, The Holiday, ever get a sequel? Ever since the romantic comedy was released in 2006, it has gained an increasingly passionate fan base filled with people who are dying to know what happened to Amanda, Graham, Iris, and Miles and their respective budding romances.
Well, according to Iris (Kate Winslet) herself, the prospect has apparently never come up. “Honestly, it’s never come up,” the actress told Deadline in a new interview. “I promise you.”
Is anyone else completely shocked and flummoxed by this claim? If so, you’re not alone—Winslet is also surprised. “Actually, I suppose, I’ve been quite surprised that it never came up,” the actress said, “because it’s the kind of film that probably would lend itself quite well to a sequel, but it has honestly never come up.”
What Is ‘The Holiday’ And Why Are People So Obsessed With It?
For those of you who have not been completely captivated by the house-swap romantic comedy starring Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Jack Black, and the aforementioned Winslet, allow us to explain the appeal. The Nancy Meyers-directed 2006 film tells the story of Iris (Winslet) and Amanda (Diaz), two women from extremely different circumstances who trade their houses at Christmastime to get away from the heartbreak that’s befallen them. For Iris, the London-based, put-upon newspaper editor, it’s the announcement that her long-time situationship has gotten engaged; for Los Angeles-based, workaholic movie trailer editor Amanda, it’s the dissolution of her relationship after her longtime boyfriend admits to cheating.
The two women find each other on a house-swapping website and trade places for the Christmas holiday, falling into romantic rhythms with the likes of Jude Law’s Graham (Iris’ brother who lives nearby and stumbles into Amanda’s isolated stay in the English countryside) and Jack Black’s Miles (a musician colleague of Amanda’s now-ex-boyfriend who is charmed by Iris’ whole vibe). It’s a classic, and one of the best modern romance movies.

Jude Law Really Didn’t Have To Ruin ‘The Holiday’ Like This
Jude Law just revealed a fact about ‘The Holiday’ that will absolutely crush your dreams.
Many members of the movie’s cast have been asked about the possibility of a sequel, but as Jude Law put it when speaking with ComicBook.com, it’s all about what Meyers wants. “That all lands in Nancy Meyers’ lap,” he explained, “I’m sure if it was—you know, she’s pretty meticulous. So she would only do it if it was a really robust idea, and then it would be whether the four of us would come back.”
As for his own interest, Law had this to say: “I would be curious to see what they’re all doing.” It seems as though the film is as much of a joy to the cast as it is to the fans who have turned it into an annual must-watch during the holiday season, if Law is to be believed:
“When it became apparent to us as a cast and a team that the love of this film was just ongoing and people were really making it a part of their holiday season on a regular basis, we started to sort of communicate because we were thrilled. You can’t plan for something like that, it’s such a delight when you hear that that happens. When does that happen? A handful of films maybe, so we felt very lucky, and it’s a beautiful thing.’ So of course, that conversation comes up.”
So, there we have it: it all depends on Nancy Meyers and what sort of idea might get those ideas rolling. To which we say: hey Nancy, we have several ideas about what a sequel to The Holiday could look like and we’d be happy to share them if it helps us get a sequel in the works—just shoot us a DM on Instagram, where we spend most of our time obsessively re-watching that clip of Jude Law doing Mr. Napkin Head again after getting his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
