Kate Winslet Teases Season 2 of HBO’s 95% RT-Score Crime Series

Kate Winslet Teases Season 2 of HBO’s 95% RT-Score Crime Series

Academy Award winner Kate Winslet reveals that Season 2 of her crime series Mare of Easttown is very likely to happen, but fans shouldn’t expect to see it for a long while yet. While her career in film is more prominent, Winslet has also shown her chops on the small screen with shows like The Regime and Mildred Pierce. However, her role as Mare Sheehan in the HBO series fully eclipses the others. Brad Ingelsby’s show features one of her best performances ever, and hopefully, a character that she will be revisiting: “I think we probably will do it, and that’s the first time I’ve felt that.”

Years ago, Winslet said that when the 2021 series wrapped, it was “done and dusted, finished.” She also commented on the possibility of reprising the character, saying, “the story was too bloody good to resist, because it took a lot out of all of us filming Mare. We were filming during COVID. Brad’s the same. We’ll only do it again if the story’s compelling enough.”

However, the Titanic actor recently spoke to Deadline and offered an optimistic but equally disappointing outlook on her detective character. About Season 2, she says that, for the first time, she’s feeling that it could happen: “They were proper conversations around a timeframe when it could be possible. And so I think we probably will do it, and that’s the first time I’ve felt that.” When offering a probable timeline, it doesn’t look like we will be getting to see the show return soon, as Winslet said:

“It wouldn’t actually be this year, I reckon it would end up being 2027 to film it. There’s a strong likelihood it would film sometime in 2027.”

Mare of Easttown was critically acclaimed upon release, earning 95% on the critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. The HBO series was also the recipient of numerous awards, including those in acting categories for Winslet, as well as Julianne Nicholson, and Evan Peters.

Ingelsby’s writing credits also include films like Out of the Furnace, The Way Back, and Echo Valley – all strong character-driven stories that may have flown under the radar in terms of reception. However, his strongest work aside from Mare of Easttown may be the 2025 crime series known as Task. Featuring staggering performances by Tom Pelphrey and Mark Ruffalo, the series was one of the best pieces of television of the year.

While the future of Mare of Easttown gets a bit brighter, fans of Ingelsby’s work should check out the exceptionally-written story about two morally flawed men standing on different sides of the law. The series has also received critical acclaim, earning a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Not only that, but Ruffalo teased the idea that both shows could be taking place in the same universe, and the two stories could “run into each other”: “At some point those two [shows] might run into each other in the future, that’s what they’re saying. It’s not set, nothing’s set.” Task is now streaming on HBO Max, and Season 1 consists of seven episodes. The series has been renewed for a second season, which is currently in development.
