While Liam Neeson is now well-known as being the “best action hero parent ever” thanks to the many times he has had to save his trouble-attracting daughter in the Taken franchise, Underworld star Kate Beckinsale is working hard to claim that title from the aged genre icon. Beckinsale has now signed on to star in The Savior from the director behind the original Highlander, with the action thriller following a mother who must resurrect her particular set of skills to “rescue her kidnapped daughter from ruthless human traffickers.”
The action thriller hails from director Russell Mulcahy, who is best known for the 1986 fantasy action cult classic Highlander, the underrated comic book movie The Shadow, and the video game movie Resident Evil: Extinction. The Savior will see Beckinsale once again demonstrate her affinity for action as she takes the lead as Jordyn Parker, a mother with a mysteriously violent past who is forced to unleash hell when her daughter is taken. All of which sounds gloriously no-nonsense.
If this all didn’t already sound like more than enough to entice you, The Savior is being billed as a wild combination of Man on Fire, Collateral, and Sicario, with the atmosphere of Prisoners and Se7en, according to Deadline. All of which suggests The Savior will deliver both the explosive action spectacle Taken fans are looking for against a far more foreboding, nightmarish background than perhaps even Liam Neeson’s Bryan Mills could handle. The Savior is written by Marc Furmie (Terminus, Viper, The Weight of Darkness) and Jason Mavraidis (Viper) and is based on a story by Corey Large.
‘The Savior’ Promises No Holds Barred Action Thrills
Filming on The Savior is expected to begin next month, with Corey Large producing the action thriller under his own 308 Ent banner. “The Savior was based on the conceit that there is nothing a parent wouldn’t do to save their child – even if it means facing the darkest demons they have spent years burying,” Large said of the project. “Russell has brought us some of the most iconic action movies and thrillers of the past 40 years and we’re thrilled to have his vision behind this gritty, no holds barred screenplay.”
Over the last few years, Beckinsale has been delivering one action thriller after another. She first went on the run as a blackmailed CIA agent in Canary Black and saved another on-screen daughter in Stolen Girl, before saving yet another on-screen daughter by embarking on a dangerous heist in last year’s Wildcat. Clearly, she needs to keep a better eye on her kids.
Ever since she debuted as the werewolf-hunting vampire warrior in the Underworld franchise way, way back in 2003, Kate Beckinsale has been a surprising must-see when it comes to action thrills. Whether it be her continued role in the Underworld series, her enchanting villainy in the Total Reboot remake misfire, or her darkly funny, slightly murderous bouncer in Jolt, the actor manages to light up the screen with her action hero prowess regardless of the quality of the surrounding movie. Certainly, The Savior has the action thriller hook and vision to be one of her best yet.
