Johnny Depp Horror Collaboration With Ridley Scott Releases First Trailer

Johnny Depp Horror Collaboration With Ridley Scott Releases First Trailer

It was announced last week that Johnny Depp and Ridley Scott would be teaming up for a new horror project that seems right up both their alleys, as it puts a new spin on an old classic. Now, a week later, we have the first trailer for the joint venture (seen below), and it’s as strange as the source material it stems from. Depp, of course, is in the midst of a comeback of sorts following his legal troubles with ex-wife Amber Heard, while Scott is preparing to finally direct his Bee Gees biopic for Paramount in November after the two resolved issues that prevented the movie from heading into production earlier this year.

Titled Hyde, the Depp-Scott collaboration comes by way of Scott Free and Mechanical Cake, and is a sequel of sorts to the classic Robert Louis Stevenson novella Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It should be noted that the project is not a movie or TV show, but a graphic novel series that will launch on Halloween. The nearly six-minute trailer for Hyde was recently released, and to coincide with its debut, Depp took to his Instagram account to celebrate, writing:

“When I was a boy, I carried a little, leather book of DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE in my back pocket everywhere I went… To step into the world of Robert Louis Stevenson, to be welcomed into Ridley Scott’s vision… and to explore this character—it’s madness and magic! Hope you folks like it…”

Controversies aside, it’s hard to sympathize with a guy who seems to consider himself superior to everyone else.

Taking place following the events of Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Hyde reimagines things a little to examine what would’ve happened had Jekyll not ended his own life and his alter ego triumphed. Now in firm control, he’’s left to “freely explore his dark tendencies with uninhibited abandon,” dwelling in the sewers of London and using his serum on others.

‘Hyde’ Is Now Available to Pre-Order

Penned by Mechanical Cake CEO Jesse Negron and writer Joe Matsumoto, Hyde has enlisted the artistic talents of Gary Erskine and Chris Weston (The Filth), with Dave Elliott serving as editor on the two-volume series. The main character will be based on Depp’s likeness, with the actor providing his input into every part of Hyde‘s creation, including the choices the devious madman makes along the way.

“This is an incredible opportunity to build a studio-level project that goes directly from the creators to the audience, with no filters in between,” said Negron in a statement at the time the project was announced. “Hyde, like everything Mechanical Cake does, is a bit off the rails, in a good way.”

Pre-orders for Hyde are now up and running on Mechanical Cake’s website, with Volume One of the series costing $30. There’s no word yet on the release date for Volume Two, but based on the trailer above, there’s little doubt that fans will be in for a real treat with this one, as not only does it showcase some stunning artwork, but, with Depp’s input, the story is sure to be a twisted tale that you won’t soon forget.
