Ana De Armas has proven herself as a capable movie lead, and she showcased this with a blistering performance in the John Wick spinoff, Ballerina. Now, the film has made a surprise return to the top of the Starz streaming chart, ringing in 2026 with a hail of gunfire more than three months after its streaming debut.
Ballerina was a movie that went through several troubled months of production, with reports suggesting that John Wick director Chad Stahelski had been brought in to take over from Len Wiseman when things were heading south. This turned out not to be the case and talk of behind the scenes problems soon evaporated when the film made its debut and soared to a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Now the film is once again proving its popularity as Starz’s number one movie as 2026 arrives. The film’s plot reads:
“Taking place during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the film follows Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) who is beginning her training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma.”
Along with its very strong audience rating, Ballerina landed a reasonable 75% from critics, and it all came together with a $137.2 million box office, which was not enough to balance out its $90 million budget, but with VOD sales and its streaming success, the film cannot be called a flop in any way, but is already well on the way to becoming a cult classic of the future.
What Is Next for the ‘John Wick’ Franchise?
It is unclear whether de Armas will ever return to the role of Eve, but there certainly seems to be a new John Wick movie on the way. Chad Stahelski initially pushed back on the idea of doing a fifth John Wick film, but has since warmed to the idea. Earlier in 2025 he said:
“Me and Mike Finch — the writer on 4 who’s also writing 5 — we’ve got a pretty good story that I think is cool. Once we have a 50-page book, and if we’re feeling it, we’ll sit with Keanu and shape this thing. Look, everybody seems to want it. It’s a matter of whether we crack it. We’re actively working on it. It’s just … is it going to be satisfying?”
While the next live-action entry in the franchise could still be a ways off, an anime prequel is also being worked on. While the last prequel, The Continental, did not pay off as intended for fans, it seems that there is more to be squeezed from the John Wick franchise, and that is exactly what is going to happen.
