Sky Sports’ Keith Downie issued an update on Joao Pedro today, revealing new details on Newcastle United’s efforts to sign the Brighton forward.
The North East reporter reveals that Newcastle United’s initial bid for the Brazilian came in at £50m, which was made up of an initial £45m plus £5m in add-ons.
This was rejected by Brighton, but the two clubs remain in talks in a bid to reach a compromise. A ‘gap in valuation’ currently exists, with the South Coast side wanting closer to £60m for Pedro.
We do, however, face competition from a Premier League rival, as Downie reveals that Chelsea are also in discussions with the Seagulls over a deal.
The Guardian’s Ed Aarons claims that both Newcastle and Chelsea have had £50m-plus offers rejected, suggesting the previously ‘unnamed club’ is very much Enzo Maresca’s Blues.
Recent reports have indicated that Pedro is keen on a move to St James’ Park and would ‘love’ to play for Eddie Howe, said Luke Edwards of The Telegraph, although there has been previous suggestion that the forward could also be tempted by a London club.
Downie adds that Newcastle ‘must be careful’ on what they are willing to spend on certain targets, as our summer budget must be stretched across four key signings, with a goalkeeper, centre-back and right winger also wanted alongside Pedro.
