Jinkx Monsoon Wants ‘X-Men’ to Cast a Trans Woman as Mystique

Jinkx Monsoon Wants ‘X-Men’ to Cast a Trans Woman as Mystique

Broadway powerhouse, two-time RuPaul’s Drag Race champion, and Doctor Who actress Jinkx Monsoon has lobbied for Marvel Studios to cast a trans woman in the MCU‘s much-anticipated X-Men reboot. She believes that the role of mutant shapeshifter Mystique should go to a trans actress, following previous portrayals by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence in Fox’s beloved superhero franchise. She explained why she thinks a trans woman should morph into the fan-favorite character, and even went so far as to manifest it for herself.

Speaking on the Vulture‘s Good One podcast, Monsoon, who is currently starring in the Tony Award-winning Broadway show Oh, Mary!, asked host Jesse David Fox whether she could take a moment to “manifest something.” After gaining his approval, she vocalized her desire to one day play Mystique on the big screen — or, at least, see the role of the blue-skinned metamorph go to a trans actress, considering how trans audiences resonate with the character. “Marvel now has regained the rights to X-Men. I think it would be a really cool idea to have a trans woman be Mystique,” she declared before elaborating on her reasons:

“She is my favorite Marvel character of all time, and I relate to her so much and I think a lot of trans people do. We think about how nice it would be to be able to just blend in and not have everyone pay attention to us if we don’t want. And then we also relate to the fact that she’s not accepted in her original form, so she has to transition to even walk around people.”

Monsoon revealed that she had thrown her name into the running, adding, “I texted my agent, and I was like, ‘I don’t know what’s going on there, but please start dropping my name.'”

Mystique Will Return for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Romijn portrayed Mystique in the 2000’s X-Men and its two sequels, X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand, while Lawrence took over the role for the X-Men prequel films, starting with X-Men: First Class in 2011. Several X-Men characters are due to make an appearance in Avengers: Doomsday when it opens in theaters in December 2026, giving the iconic superheroes another stint on the big screen before the MCU debuts its X-Men reboot in 2028. Romijn is confirmed to be reprising her role for the Russo Brothers’ next Avengers movie, but a question mark remains over who will play the character in Jake Schreier’s currently untitled X-Men film.

Even with a new line-up of X-Men coming soon, different variants could make cameos from time to time (this is the MCU, after all). Romijn has made no secret of the fact that she is open to returning, even though a new version of the mutant saga is on the way. One of the names heavily rumored for the X-Men reboot is Hunter Schafer. The Euphoria star said it “would be cool” to play Mystique in response to rampant speculation that she is going to be making her MCU debut as the classic character. Camila Mendes and Mimi Keene have also both been suggested in fan castings, so Monsoon may face some competition for the coveted role.
