Like many other movies that find their way onto free streaming platforms, Jennifer Lopez
’s 2002 psychological thriller Enough
is holding the attention of audiences despite being heavily panned by critics on its original release. A story of domestic abuse and revenge, the movie adapted the 1998 novel Black and Blue by Anna Quindlen, and delivered a reasonable $51 million box office haul from its $30 million budget. Now, it has captured the attention of viewers on Tubi
, and has been hanging onto a number two spot on the streamer’s movie chart for several days.
Lopez has been involved in as many duds as runaway successes in her career as an actor, and while Enough did not completely crash and burn, it certainly struggled to please very many critics. The storyline synopsis reads:
“Working-class waitress Slim (Jennifer Lopez) finds her life transformed when she marries wealthy contractor Mitch (Billy Campbell). She settles into an idyllic suburban life and seems to have everything she wants. Her dream is shattered when she discovers her husband is anything but perfect. His abusive behavior forces her to go on the run, eluding an increasingly obsessive Mitch and his lethal henchman.”
The revenge plot is one that usually can find an audience, and the 67% approval rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter, alongside the film’s reasonable financial win, proves that was the case with Enough. Critics, however, only scored the film 22%, and found plenty to fault in the movie’s execution.
Is Jennifer Lopez’s ‘Enough’ Worth Watching on Tubi?
If you often find yourself agreeing with movie critics, then it may be worth skipping Enough. The consensus about the film is that it “exploits the serious issue of spousal abuse to make an illogical, unintelligent thriller.” This is a common complaint throughout the reviews, including Cinema Crazed’s Felix Vasquez Jr., who said, “Far-fetched, unrealistic, and just downright exploitative.” This was a slightly more constructive criticism than London Evening Standard critic Alexander Walker’s analysis which slams Lopez as “the sort who does little except pose with lip gloss highlighting her uninteresting face.” Perhaps a little unnecessary.
However, even though audiences were split on the movie, many found something to enjoy – if that is the right word for a dark movie about abuse and its consequences. The common theme of most people finding the story completely unrealistic is offset by praise for Lopez’s central performance as Slim.
