Apple TV has released the first trailer for the second season of The Last Thing He Told Me, a drama and thriller series starring Jennifer Garner. Angourie Rice, David Morse, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau are all returning from the previous season, which was premiered on April 14, 2023. The trailer teases an intense reunion for Garner’s character, Hannah Hall, as she comes into contact with her husband Owen five years after he disappeared. While the first season was about Hannah forming a relationship with her step-daughter, the second season puts more of an emphasis on their already-established relationship.
The trailer, which can be viewed below, promises as much intrigue, secrets, and dangerous criminal connections as the original batch of episodes. Moreover, while the first season was based on the New York Times bestselling novel, The Last Thing He Told Me, the second season will adapt the sequel novel, titled The First Time I Saw Him, which is also a bestseller and was just released earlier this month. Apple’s production on the second season smoothly coincided with the new novel landing in bookstores, with the first episode set to be released on Friday, Feb. 20, with new episodes being released every Friday after.
The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2 will consist of eight episodes, which is one more episode than the previous season. For these new episodes, Garner’s character finds herself up against a mysterious crime family, the group that Owen believes is the key to allowing him to be with his family again. However, this inevitably puts Hannah and stepdaughter Bailey in danger, leading to all the action and fight scenes that are featured in this first trailer.
‘The Last Thing He Told Me’ Season 2 Will Be Based on a New Novel
Interestingly, this second season of The Last Thing He Told Me comes after a somewhat negative critical response to the first season. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Season 1 of the series received a 41% “Rotten” rating based on 34 reviews, and a 48% audience score, which was based on 250+ user-submitted ratings. Despite this disappointing reception, the series more than likely received enough views to justify the renewal among the many other Apple TV originals, along with having Garner attached to the project as well as the sequel novel being released, allowing for new material to be adapted.
Although this new season is set five years after the previous one ended, it seems as though Hannah and Bailey are right back into similar danger that they had found themselves in last season. What should intrigue viewers is the interesting questions that are posed amid the treachery, danger, and uncertainty, and that is whether this family is worth bringing back together despite all the darkness and mystery surrounding Owen and this new mob family that will serve as the primary threat in these new episodes. Hopefully, this new season will generate as much buzz as the first did, and provide a satisfying conclusion to the story of Hannah’s fractured family.
