Jenna Ortega & The Weeknd’s New Thriller Stakes Out a 2025 Release Date

We recently learned that Abel Tesfaye, a.k.a. the pop star known as The Weeknd, is making his feature film debut alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in Hurry Up Tomorrow. Whatever you might think about Tesfaye in HBO’s The Idol, it’s hard to deny that the psychological thriller – from It Comes at Night director Trey Edward Shults – sounds intriguing, especially with that cast. And now we know when we’ll be able to see it, as Lionsgate has set a 2025 release date for Hurry Up Tomorrow.

Hurry Up Tomorrow has been given a release date of May 16, 2025, per Deadline. Featuring and inspired by music from The Weeknd, the release of Hurry Up Tomorrow will coincide with the Grammy-winning and Oscar-nominated recording artist’s forthcoming new album of the same name. The upcoming LP will complete a trifecta for The Weeknd beginning with the records After Hours (2020) and Dawn FM (2022). Hurry Up Tomorrow also follows The Weeknd’s HBO series The Idol.

Maybe The Weeknd’s New Thriller With Jenna Ortega & Barry Keoghan Can Save Lionsgate

Hurry Up Tomorrow, described as a musically driven psychological thriller, has landed a worldwide distribution deal at Lionsgate.

As published in Los 40, Tesfaye noted that Hurry Up Tomorrow is “the creative apex of the project, serving as the third and final chapter crafted with existential and self-referential themes as seen in the recent visionary trailers that have fans fired up with anticipation for this final installment.”

Hurry Up Tomorrow is produced by The Weeknd’s production company, Manic Phase, along with Reza Fahim, the late Kevin Turen, and Harrison Kreiss. Executive producers include Ortega, Shults, Michael Rapino, Ryan Kroft, Wassim “Sal” Slaiby, and Harrison Huffman. Worldwide distribution will be handled by Lionsgate, which also released a title treatment for the film:

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson stated:

“Abel is a visionary whose art cannot be confined by any single medium. With Hurry Up Tomorrow, in partnership with Trey, his musical universe expands onto the big screen with a psychological thriller that will usher in a new cinematic experience for fans. We are thrilled to be bringing it to audiences worldwide.”

The Weeknd and Trey Edward Shults: Masters of the Dark Arts

As Fogelson noted, the Trey Edward Shults/The Weeknd team-up could prove promising. Shults is an experienced director in the genre space, having previously helmed A24’s It Comes At Night. Shults’ feature debut, Krisha, garnered him a number of accolades, including the National Board of Review’s Best Directorial Debut, The Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award at the Gothams, both the Grand Jury Award and Audience Award at SXSW, and The Independent Spirit John Cassavetes Award. Shults also directed the thrilling 2019 drama Waves, starring Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Taylor Russell.

Shults’ experience with darker movies will mesh well with The Weeknd’s pop noir aesthetic, which can be heard across his catalog, including his 2015 breakout LP Beauty Behind the Madness, followed by the excellent Starboy (2018) and After Hours, the latter spawning the ubiquitous hit “Blinding Lights.”

The cover of After Hours featured a bloodied The Weeknd who went full method, promoting the album in bandages. The Weekend has been typically cryptic with Hurry Up Tomorrow, suggesting that the new project could be the end of his alter-ego. “A new path awaits. When today ends, I’ll discover who I am,” the artist stated.

Hurry Up Tomorrow the album is set to arrive on January 24, 2025, via XO/Republic Records. It has confirmed guest spots in the singles “Timeless” (with Playboi Carti) and “São Paulo” (featuring Anitta). Among The Weeknd’s co-producers on the record are Pharell Williams, Max Martin, Oscar Holter, Mike Dean, Ojivolta, Twisco, and Sean Solymar.

The album should give a heady preview of what to expect from the film, which is set to arrive on May 16, just in time for the summer movie season.
