Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher urges the club to help Arne Slot and Andy Robertson by signing a new left-back. Carragher believes that Slot lacks a suitable option to rotate and eventually succeed the ageing 30-year-old fullback at the club.
Robertson suffered a knock during the early minutes of the Premier League game against Fulham, which resulted in serious consequences. As Issa Diop survived a straight red card for his gruesome challenge on Robertson, the Scotsman failed to regain composure.
Robertson’s unfortunate deflection allowed Fulham to take an early lead followed by a red card for the 30-year-old moments later. The last-man tackle on Harry Wilson earned the Scotsman a red card at a crucial stage with his knock playing a big factor.
Liverpool played most of the game with 10 men and eventually managed to secure a 2-2 draw despite poor officiating. The Scotland captain received cruel criticism on social media but many Liverpool fans defended him against toxic online trolls.
Speaking to Sky Sports (via Mirror), Carragher stated that Liverpool should sign a new left-back in January to compete with Robertson. He said:
“Robertson is having a tough time and it’s a very unforgiving position. [Against Fulham] He doesn’t look like he’s running back fully, he’s had a whack then gingerly goes to control the ball before getting a red card. He needs help. Liverpool haven’t got any back-up and it’s something they need to address in January.”
The former Liverpool defender immediately provided his choice for the left-back position, pinpointing Bournemouth fullback Milos Kerkez. He added:
“Kerkez has been a revelation at Bournemouth. The technical director who brought him to Bournemouth [Richard Hughes] is now the sporting director at Liverpool. Kerkez looks like a full back and he’s aggressive. He’s been superb since he came into the Premier League and is one to watch in the future whether he stays or moves on.”
Carragher has made some valid points as Liverpool’s left-back struggles remained evident since the last season under the legendary manager Jurgen Klopp. While Kostas Tsimikas enjoyed some good games this season, he remains unreliable with recurring injuries while Robertson struggles with burnout.
Milos Kerkez has impressed at Bournemouth this season and Liverpool has shown interest in him before. Rest assured, the left-back position is becoming a necessity for Liverpool who already lack a left-footed centre-back.
