James Gunn’s DCU Suddenly Looks A Lot Like The Snyderverse

James Gunn’s DCU Suddenly Looks A Lot Like The Snyderverse

All of a sudden, James Gunn’s DC Universe looks a lot more like the Snyderverse. After the ending of 2025’s Superman, James Gunn’s DCU officially became the future of the comic book franchise. All upcoming DC movies will be set within this world, unless otherwise stated as Elseworlds projects.

This shifts the focus away from the controversial movies of the DCEU, now dubbed the Snyderverse due to the heavy early involvement of Zack Snyder. The Snyderverse began with Man of Steel and eventually ended with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, despite the latter being far removed, tonally and narratively, from what the DCEU began as in 2013.

The same can be said for Gunn’s DCU, which established a new set of characters, storylines, and a creative vision that separates it from the DCEU. As the DCU’s Chapter One, titled Gods and Monsters, continues, however, some striking similarities to the DCEU have suddenly become notable.

Snyderverse Collaborator Junkie XL Will Score Supergirl

The next film in James Gunn’s DCU is Supergirl, set to release worldwide on June 26, 2026. Supergirl is nearing the end of post-production, meaning more details about the film are emerging. One such detail is that Junkie XL, also known as Tom Holkenborg, will compose the musical score for Supergirl (via Film Music Reporter).

This is interesting, not only for the fact that Holkenborg has composed some great musical scores, but also that he did so several times for Zack Snyder in the DCEU. Junkie XL composed the score for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice alongside Hans Zimmer before working on Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Now, Junkie XL will trade the DCEU for the DCU with Supergirl.

Junkie XL’s Scores Were A Huge Part Of The Snyderverse

Although Holkenborg working on Snyderverse projects is a big talking point, the fact that they were such a big part of the franchise makes his switch to the DCU even more intriguing. The score for Batman v Superman is one of the most unique in superhero movie history, differing massively from the usual scores attributed to either of the titular characters.

With Zack Snyder‘s Justice League, Junkie XL’s score for the film was restored. It was considered a vast improvement over Danny Elfman’s music for the 2017 theatrical release of Justice League.

Between Batman v Superman and Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Holkenborg’s scores became part of the Snyderverse’s identity. In a sudden, strange turn of events, Holkenborg is now going to be important to a big film in the DCEU’s replacement.

Junkie XL Is Not The Only Snyderverse Alumni Returning In Supergirl

To make Supergirl even more like the Snyderverse, Jason Momoa will return in the DCU film. Momoa played Aquaman in the Snyderverse, even concluding the franchise with his second solo film. In Supergirl, Momoa will return to the world of DC, only this time as Lobo, an intergalactic bounty hunter.

This marks the second Snyderverse creative involved in the DCU‘s Supergirl movie, truly drawing similarities between it and the long-dormant Snyder’s DCEU. Whether there will be any more similarities between the two franchises remains to be seen.
