James Gunn Teases Another Secret DCU Series In Development

Did James Gunn just reveal that another secret project is being added to the DCU slate?

While Gunn made an initial announcement of projects being developed for the franchise in January 2023, he was also clear that he wasn’t sharing the entire slate, and numerous other projects were in the works. Since then, films including Clayface, Teen Titans, Wonder Woman, and now a Superman follow-up titled Man of Tomorrow have been added to the list, while projects such as The Authority, Waller, and Paradise Lost seem to have been stuck in development.

On the Peacemaker Podcast, via DCU Updates, Gunn recently let it slip that something potentially very CGI-heavy could be in the works. He described it as a “show,” but didn’t reveal who the writer and director were, or any other specifics. It sounds like it’ll be VFX-heavy, and likely more superhero-centric than the upcoming Lanterns, which so far has downplayed much of its source material’s cosmic superhero aspects in early marketing material. Gunn said:

“I was just meeting with the writer and director of a forthcoming secret DCU project that we’re doing and they were asking us about how much VFX and how much it costs and how many VFX characters we can have and than they were talking about the superheroes in the show and I was like ‘The one thing you kind of got to be careful about is the superhero costumes because they’re really difficult to make, they’re difficult to make look good and they usually costs a lot more money than it does creating a CGI character”

Gunn’s use of the word “secret” suggests that this upcoming project may not have been part of the initial Chapter One – Gods and Monsters announcement. The secrecy definitely rules out previously announced series such as Paradise Lost, Waller, or Booster Gold. It also appears to be a live-action series, so it isn’t Mister Miracle or Blue Beetle, two animated shows that fans are still wondering about.

Gunn’s hints obviously aren’t a lot to go on. However, shortly after Superman opened in theaters, rumors started swirling that separate Mister Terrific and Jimmy Olsen-led series were in development. The Olsen show is rumored to feature Skyler Gisondo’s version of the character interviewing and spotlighting a variety of supervillains, potentially including Gorilla Grodd, who was teased in Creature Commandos. We’ve also speculated how a Mister Terrific series could perfectly adapt Tom King’s Strange Adventures and bring in Adam Strange.

There are plenty of other great potential ideas for DC television shows. A Zatanna-led Mystik U series would beat Marvel to the punch with their own magic school-centric series, Strange Academy. Creature Commandos teased the Metal Men, characters that have been in development for either a live-action or animated film at Warner Bros. since before Man of Steel was released. Superman and Peacemaker have both referenced martians, possibly teeing up a Martian Manhunter series. For now, we have nothing to do but wonder, but more details may emerge during New York Comic Con, which kicks off on Oct. 9, 2025 — the same day the Peacemaker Season 2 finale airs.
