James Gunn has finally shared his thoughts on the impending sale of Warner Bros. Discovery to Netflixand what it means for the DCU and his role going forward. Although the deal is not yet “done,” it seems unlikely that there is going to be anything that comes along and derails the merger between the two industry giants, which will have huge ramifications for the future of many franchises, with DCU included.
Many fans of Zack Snyder’s DC projects have already made their minds up that this merger will see the Snyderverse finally being “restored” and James Gunn’s new DCU being disbanded as they have been demanding for years. In reality, there is probably nothing about to change in the immediate plans for the DC franchise, but for Gunn, it is not something he hasn’t been through before, which means, his response to the merger is pretty much as diplomatic and positive as you would expect. During an appearance on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, Gunn said:
“Do I have hopes? No, I really don’t because everything’s unknown. I think it’s all really exciting, frankly. So I hope and pray for the best.”
Gunn added to this by saying, “And I’ve been through these sorts of changes so many times that I’ll always be careful what you wish for because you don’t really know until you know.” He noted, “I hope it goes well, and I think it’s exciting, you know, every direction has really exciting things for DC, so I’m excited about where it’s going to go.”
James Gunn’s DCU Faces a Challenging 2026 & 2027
While Superman was seen as a success last summer, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU still has many challenges ahead as they attempt to establish a challenger to the mighty MCU. While Marvel’s juggernaut has been teetering a little in the last couple of years, with 2025 being a critical success but financial minefield, Superman’s performance was not as astounding as it could have been.
With so much attention focused to Gunn’s Superman, both the first solo movie featuring the Man of Steel since Zack Snyder’s 2013 movie and the first big screen outing for the new DCU regime, it was expected that the film would manage to set new records when it was released in the past summer. The film ended its theatrical run at $616 million, just under the $670 million taken by Man of Steel, putting its true success as the foundation stone of the DCU in question.
Next up for the franchise is Supergirl, with Milly Alcock playing the title role and taking on, among others, Jason Momoa’s Lobo in her first outing. This will be accompanied by the surprise horror movie addition to the slate, Clayface, and then, in 2027, Man of Tomorrow. The performance of these three movies, and Gunn’s casting decision on who will play the DCU’s Batman, could well be the deciding factor in what happens next for the franchise.
