James Gunn Reveals ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Spinoffs Planned for Marvel

James Gunn‘s ambitious new DCU is finally underway with the premiere of Creature Commandos on Max. This is the first project Gunn has produced for Warner Bros. since being appointed the co-president of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran in October 2022. Gunn previously made a name for himself in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he took the D-list property Guardians of the Galaxy and turned it into a household name. Given how popular the Guardians of the Galaxy are, it is surprising that Disney and Marvel have not developed more spin-offs featuring the characters. According to Gunn, at one point, he was developing at least three spin-offs based on Guardians of the Galaxy.

In an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast with Josh Horowitz (via Discussing Film), Gunn reveals that while he was at Marvel, he was developing multiple Guardians of the Galaxy spin-offs. One of them was a Ravagers Disney+ series. Gunn also revealed plans for a Rocket and Groot film, but that morphed into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, he originally wanted to do the Rocket and Groot movie first. Gunn also mentioned work on a Star-Lord project, The Legendary Star-Lord, one that was seemingly hinted at in the end-credits of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn said they got pretty far along on a pitch and might have hinted at that still being a possibility when he said, “I’m excited to see whatever they do with Guardians. I would love to see them take those characters and see more stories with them. Chris [Pratt] has my blessing. They all have my blessing. Chris keeps saying, ‘Is this okay? Is this okay?’ and I’m like ‘I am totally okay with whatever you do. You go do it.’ He is one of my very close friends and I would love to see him to be Star-Lord again.”

The only two Guardians of the Galaxy spin-offs have been the Baby Groot-centric animated shorts I Am Groot and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which debuted on Disney+ in November 2022 and helped set up Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. That sequel ended with the tease of a new team including Rocket, Groot, Cosmo, Kraglin, Adam Warlock, and Phyla-Vel. Between that and the promise that Star-Lord would return, many fans are curious to see if the Guardians of the Galaxy will play a role in Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.

James Gunn Had a Lot of Ideas for Guardians Spin-Offs

It’s no surprise that Gunn had a lot of ideas for Guardians of the Galaxy spin-offs. At one point, it appeared that Gunn was seemingly going to be the architect of Marvel’s cosmic universe, although Kevin Feige has downplayed those reports. Marvel Studios was all set to go on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 for a May 2020 release date, but plans changed when Disney fired James Gunn due to a series of old, offensive tweets. Gunn’s old social media posts went viral in a targeted harassment campaign after the director publicly criticized the Trump administration. Shortly after Disney fired Gunn, Warner Bros. quickly snagged him, brought him into the DCEU, and revamped The Suicide Squad. While Disney and Marvel did end up rehiring Gunn and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released in May 2023, by that point, he had accepted the job to co-run DC Studios.

Regarding the Ravagers television spin-off, the project was likely being considered after Gunn returned to Marvel in 2019, just a few months before Marvel Studios unveiled its first slate of Disney+ series, including WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and Hawkeye. Meanwhile, The Rocket and Groot spin-off might have been in consideration as far back as the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. The Legendary Star-Lord seems to still be in development, but the question many are wondering is if the Guardians of the Galaxy and the characters have the same appeal without Gunn at the helm.
