James Gunn Just Gave the Best Batman Casting Update You Will Hear

Who will be the next James Bond? Who will be the next Doctor Who? Who will be the next Batman? These are three questions that seem to come around time and time again, and two of them have been dominating headlines recently with speculation about who will fill two of cinema’s most coveted roles. For the latter, James Gunn has yet to cast his DCU Batman, who will fight for Gotham City in an alternate reality to that of Robert Pattinson’s The Batman. While many people are in the frame according to rumors, betting odds, and fan speculation, Gunn has confirmed one person who won’t be donning the cape and cowl, and god is it a relief!

From Alan Ritchson to Keanu Reeves, Jensen Ackles to George Clooney – yes, that was a real rumor – there have been several prominent actors in the frame to play the Dark Knight in The Brave and the Bold and other DCU projects. But that person will not be Chris Pratt2 – although he will be appearing in the DCU at some point. What a surprise. We really didn’t see that coming, etc etc.

Gunn recently stopped by to chat with Mexican creator Escorpión Dorado while promoting the return of Peacemaker on HBO Max, and, although many people avoid asking such direct questions that everyone wants to know the answer to, Dorado quizzed Gunn on whether his former Guardians of the Galaxy collaborator would be the next Batman. Gunn’s response was both directly succinct, but tantalizingly vague on where Pratt could fit into his DCU world.

“As Batman? No. As something else? Yes. Chris Pratt is one of my best friends. I want him at DC.”

James Gunn has made no secret that he likes to surround himself with people he knows how to work with, and who can deliver the performances he needs for any particular project. For that reason, the same faces turn up again and again in Gunn’s work, with actors like Nathan Fillion, Michael Rooker, and Jennifer Holland turning up in several productions. Several of Gunn’s MCU Guardians cast have already dropped in on the DCU, with Bradley Cooper showing up as Jor-El, while Rooker and Pom Klementieff lent their voices to the Fortress of Solitude’s robots.

There have also been reports that Dave Bautista is likely to get a role in the DCU, and Gunn has also said he wants Zoe Saldaña to join the DCU as well. So, it was natural that Pratt would also be in line for a role of some description. The real question is who could he actually play?

Although Gunn has remained tight-lipped over who Pratt might play, fans have already been adding to speculation that he could play Booster Gold, who has been confirmed to be getting his own TV show, but several other actors have been earmarked for that role, according to numerous “scoopers” online. Perhaps the best thing to do would be to just ignore the chatter and just wait and see what happens, safe in the knowledge that Pratt will not be playing Batman in the foreseeable future – something we should all be thankful for.
