WARNING: Spoilers for ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ are below.Avatar: Fire and Ash continues the epic saga of Jake Sully and Neytiri as they fight to protect their family and the planet of Pandora from harm. Along the way, the bond between their Na’vi teenage daughter Kiri and adopted human son Spider deepens, culminating in a scene where the two of them share a kiss while they are alone in the forest. The make-out moment between Sigourney Weaver (who is now 76) and Jack Champion (now 21) immediately sparked age concerns, considering the movie was shot several years ago, which means Champion was only 15 years old when they filmed the franchise’s third installment.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron addressed the controversial kiss between Weaver and Champion and explained how they navigated intimacy rules to legally pull it off. It turns out that he employed a bit of digital movie magic to make the moment appear as if it had happened when, in fact, it hadn’t – at least not between those two actors. He enlisted two stand-ins to help with the smooch, ensuring that they maintained appropriate boundaries for the cast:
“What we did was have Sigourney kiss somebody else and Jack kissed another minor, and then we put the two together. They played the scene and did everything except the kiss. I think it was OK for Sigourney to kiss him on the cheek. There are a lot of rules around intimacy stuff, so that was one of the very few times that we had to do something that was just the tiniest bit inauthentic, but we had to do it because we had to do it that way.”
‘Avatar 4’ Will Feature a Significant Time Jump
The continuation of Cameron’s sweeping sci-fi saga will be contingent on the financial success of Avatar: Fire and Ash. The filmmaker previously asserted on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, via IGN, that he would finish the last two entries in the form of novels if that was his only choice. However, Weaver desperately hopes that the latest film will achieve the necessary profit margins to satisfy the studio, so the final two sequels get the green light, as she told THR that she wants to see the story through to completion. “I think [Avatar] 4 and 5 are so amazing. I think the saga should continue because all of them are part of one big story.”
So far, things are heading in a positive direction. Avatar: Fire and Ash had a strong opening weekend at the box office, taking in over $345 million worldwide, which suggests that there is sufficient demand from fans for the sequels, even though the global debut fell short of The Way of Water‘s staggering $441.6 million haul. The film will need to demonstrate strong staying power in the coming weeks in order to achieve the record-breaking numbers of its two predecessors, but it is clear from the outset that audiences are still turning out in their droves for Cameron’s blockbuster franchise.
If Avatar 4 goes ahead, then Cameron has already confirmed that there would be a significant time jump in the next installment that would take the young cast into adulthood and no doubt factor into the evolving relationship of Kiri and Spider. It could also explore deeper themes and challenging moral territory, as the story heads towards its ultimate conclusion. The most recent entry also set the stage for another villain, who could potentially turn out to be the franchise’s big bad, leading to a major showdown.
