J.J. Abrams’ New Mystery Movie With Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega & More Is Something We’ve Been Waiting 13 Years For

J.J. Abrams’ New Mystery Movie With Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega & More Is Something We’ve Been Waiting 13 Years For

Famed director J.J. Abrams is currently developing a new movie with a shockingly star-studded cast, and for a multitude of reasons, this is the director’s most exciting project in years. Abrams first entered the movie and TV scene in the early 1990s as a writer. However, his big break came in 2004 when he co-created the sci-fi mystery series, Lost, which is still considered to be one of the best shows of the 2000s. From there, Abrams began directing major Hollywood blockbusters, but after some bumps in the road, the director has been quiet for the past few years.

For the first time since 2019, Abrams is returning to the director’s chair with a brand-new original movie. At this time, very little is known about this picture besides its genre and its outstanding cast. Apparently, the movie is a mystery and will star Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, Emma Mackey, and Samuel L. Jackson. On top of that, the film is being produced by Abrams’ own company, Bad Robot. Even with so little information to go on, Abrams’ new movie is incredibly exciting, especially when you consider the director’s unique Hollywood history.

J.J. Abrams Is Finally Making An Original Movie Again

Why Abrams Hasn’t Made An Original Film In So Long

Abrams’ new movie is so thrilling because it is the first original film he has directed since 2011. Of the six movies Abrams has directed, only one of them has been an original, non-franchise story that was written by Abrams himself. That movie is Super 8, which follows a group of teenagers who are filming a movie when they witness a catastrophic and otherworldly accident. Despite grossing $260 million at the box office and earning rave reviews from critics, it was the first and last original movie Abrams ever made – until now.

Many may be wondering why it took so long for this to happen. The simplest answer is that Abrams rose to fame a bit too quickly. After successfully directing Mission: Impossible III , Abrams was given the chance to direct two massive sci-fi franchises: Star Trek and Star Wars. While Abrams’ franchise films brought in a lot of money and much critical success, they also received backlash from fans who disliked the direction he was taking these film series. Ultimately, this kept him from pursuing his own projects and from even making movies for a few years.

J.J. Abrams’ New Movie Can Get His Career Back on Track

After his franchise disappointments and his brief hiatus, Abrams’ new movie could be the project that gets his career moving again. Although many are probably still frustrated with how Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker came out, it has been a few years, and hopefully, Abrams can be given a second chance. If his new movie sticks the landing by being compelling and well-made, then he could find himself on the same road to fame that he found in the 2010s. Arguably, he deserves it. Abrams is a very strong storyteller and director.

J.J. Abrams’ mystery movie – which already stars Glen Powell and Jenna Ortega – adds a Star Wars actor, but not one he’s directed before.

Fortunately, Abrams’ movie already has a strong foundation. Abrams himself is a great filmmaker, but his cast is also a definite strength. Powell and Ortega have a lot of star power at the moment due to their recently successful franchises, i.e. Twisters and Wednesday. On top of that, Jackson is always a powerhouse and Mackey has a budding base of fans. In this way, J.J. Abrams has the opportunity to reclaim his star power, and he already seems to be on a solid track.
