It Looks Like Stephen King Fans Will Be Getting a New Version of ‘IT’ After All

Stephen King writes a lot of very popular books, so fans rarely have to wait very long for the next adaptation. Just lately, the first season of ITspin-off IT: Welcome to Derry wrapped up on HBO. There’s been more talk of a Dark Tower TV show recently, and now Andy Muschietti — the director behind both of the IT movies from the 2010s as well as several episodes of Welcome to Derry — has a promising update about a supercut that mashes together both IT: Chapter One and Chapter Two, complete with new scenes.

Muschietti has talked about this supercut before, but the last time he weighed in on the project, it didn’t sound like it was very far along. “Yes, still a big dream of mine. Since we’ve been involved heavily in this show, we hadn’t had time to execute it,” he said in December. “Crossing fingers.”

But now, X user @Stephenkingesp2 has dug up a Spanish-language interview with Andy Muschietti and his producing partner Barbara Muschietti, and it sounds like things are further along than we last assumed. The following translation comes from The Direct:

Andy Muschietti: “[A] supercut is something that’s coming, and we’ll see how this series does…”

Barbara Muschietti: “I was wondering about it a month ago, Stephen King asked how the supercut was going.”

Andy: “It’s great because it’s truly a dream to put the two films into a single narrative piece. It will possibly have a different structure and will have extra scenes, added scenes. I still have to film some of them… because they are the interstitial fabric between the pieces of the story.”

Barbara: “But we don’t have time, that’s the problem.”

Andy: “But I think there’s interest. I think the studio is interested in funding it. We’ll see.”

What Would an ‘IT’ Supercut Look Like?

The first IT movie runs for two hours and 15 minutes while the sequel runs for two hours and 49 minutes. Together, that would make for a very long feature, but superfans would no doubt turn out, especially if there are new scenes to watch. It recalls what happened last December when Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair — a new cut of the Kill Bill movies that edited both films together — came out in theaters. Warner Bros., the studio behind the IT movies, has experience with this kind of thing. In 2021 they released Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a heavily remixed and expanded version of Justice League, onto HBO Max to much applause from fans.

IT: Welcome to Derry ended up being one of HBO’s most watched series debuts in history, behind only The Last of Us and House of the Dragon, so interest in the IT story remains high. That said, HBO hasn’t officially announced whether Welcome to Derry will be renewed for a second season. In the likely event that it is, that could take up a lot of the Muschiettis’ time. Maybe Warner Bros. could time things so they could cut together a super-sized IT movie before work on Welcome to Derry season 2 begins in earnest.

Both IT movies were big hits, but Chapter Two is largely considered a step down from Chapter One in quality. A new supercut could allow the Muschiettis to revisit some of the things people didn’t like. All that’s needed now is the official word.
