Is Wicked Suitable For Children? Parents Guide For Musical Movie

The colorful world of Oz and the inclusion of world-renowned pop star Ariana Grande will likely lead to many children wanting to see Wicked, surely leading parents to wonder if it’s suitable for younger viewers. The upcoming Wicked movie is based on the critically-acclaimed Broadway musical of the same name, which itself is based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. In addition to Grande, the cast of Wicked includes Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.

The story of Wicked follows Elphaba and Glinda as they form an unlikely friendship while attending Shiz University in Oz. However, their relationship becomes complicated after an encounter with the Wizard of Oz. While the world of Oz can be very cheerful and colorful at times, certain elements of the world can also be quite dark and sinister. Even with those darker elements, Wicked is a movie that is suitable for children.

Wicked Is Rated PG For Scary Action, Thematic & Suggestive Material

Wicked May Have Scary Action Scenes And Some Inappropriate Jokes

Wicked is rated PG on the current rating scale. This rating is between G (which is all ages) and PG-13 (which cautions parents of children under 13). The PG rating for Wicked suggests that some elements of the movie could be seen as unsuitable for children by some parents, but it should be mostly fine. Wicked’s rating emphasizes that there are some scary action scenes in the movie. Some of these scenes can be seen in the trailers for Wicked, such as Elphaba being pursued by the flying monkeys.

In addition to scary action, Wicked’s PG rating also warns about suggestive material, such as inappropriate jokes. Therefore, it’s possible that some of the jokes in Wicked could be seen as offensive to some. This is not necessarily surprising, since the movie will follow Elphaba, Glinda, and others at a university. Therefore, the characters may not all be very mature. However, since the film still has a PG rating, it is likely that any of these jokes would go over the heads of younger viewers.

Wicked Is Mostly Suitable For Children

Wicked’s Story Includes Positive Messages For Children

Overall, Wicked should be suitable for most children. The movie could be seen as an alternate prequel story of sorts to 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, which is commonly viewed as a children’s movie. Even though the two movies are not related, Wicked will likely be similar in tone to the classic film. Additionally, the Wicked stageplay also welcomes children. While there may be some changes between the Wicked movie and the Broadway musical, none of the changes will impact whether children can find enjoyment in the story.

Wicked is set to be a huge hit, and if the film manages to live up to expectation, there is going to be a huge influx of new Wizard of Oz projects.

The story of Wicked also includes several positive messages that would be beneficial for children, such as learning to be a good friend, never judging a book by its cover, and upholding our morals. It’s likely children will learn a lot from the story of Wicked. Parents should trust their own judgment, first and foremost, but Wicked should absolutely be suitable for children.
