Instant Newcastle United fan/writer reaction after Newcastle 1 Manchester City 3

Newcastle United 1 Manchester City 3 – Saturday 7 March 2026 8pm

Instant fan/writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.

Nat Seaton:

‘We were short on quality tonight.

It was always going to be difficult but Man City played well and other than the goal and maybe one other chance, we were nowhere near making a game of it.

Their bench would get in our starting line up but that doesn’t mean we can’t match up, realistically though, we need our best players on the park from the start and there are just too many games for us with our squad for this to be realistic.

One positive – Tino back in a black and white shirt…

It’s the biggy on Tuesday, let’s hope for a better performance and a result that we can take to Barca with us all filled with hope.’

Simon Ritter:

‘For 20 minutes, we battered Man City and should have scored two, before taking the lead with a superb Barnes finish.

For the rest of the match we were cut apart, run ragged and made to look toothless by vastly superior opponents.

They passed the ball better, they moved into space more smoothly, they fouled tactically when danger threatened.

Did anyone in black-and-white play to his full potential? I don’t think so.

As depressing a watch as the match against their noisy neighbours was exhilarating. Roll on Tuesday.”

Billy Miller:

‘Beating both Manchester teams in three nights was probably too much to ask.

For the first half hour it looked like we may manage it but once Man City clicked we barely got a kick.

Just two games against Barcelona, a trip to Chelsea and a derby still to navigate in March!’

Tony Mallabar:

‘For the first 25 minutes thought we took it to them, but after that we sat back and the inevitable happens.

So fair play Man City, you were the better team and worthy winners, but genuine question to any Man City fans reading this (and I know your reply already),but after winning so much, does Pep’s tippy tappy football not bore you?’

David Punton:

‘Bitter disappointment after a good start as our FA Cup journey comes to an end.

The heroics of midweek were not to be repeated as Man City once again held something of a hex over us.

That was the fifth time we’ve had to play them this season.

We just didn’t build on the start that Barnes gave us and it was a great finish for the goal itself.

Always a really hard game against his lot and it seems to be the norm that Pep Guardiola loses his rag when he comes up here.

This is a really hard run of games we’re in.

Barca will have watched this tonight, so it goes without saying we’ll have to be a hell of a lot better.

What a strange season. We just can’t get going.’

GToon:

‘Defeats against this lot are irrelevant really, due to the 115 charges.

What does concern me is our team.

What on earth are we going to do with Wissa and Woltemade? That’s over 100m spent and it has got to be pound for pound the biggest waste of money in the club’s history.

There is one game left this season and that’s against the SMB. Roll over in that one and there needs to be a serious rethink on every level.

Wake me up when this season is over.’

Jamie Smith:

‘An absolute disgrace.

Such a good opening but WTF was Joelinton doing on the bench?

Season over and only Howe knows why he put such a half cooked team out against such an ominous opponent.’
