Instant Newcastle United fan/writer reaction after Liverpool 4 Newcastle 1

Liverpool 4 Newcastle 1 – Saturday 31 January 2026 8pm

Instant fan/writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.

Nat Seaton:

‘Not a performance that warranted a 4-1 scoreline but that’s what happened.

A better away performance which gives a bit of hope for all of these away games coming up.

Terrible last goal to concede and sums up our record at Anfield, that one day will change, it just can’t go on like this!

On to the semi final and our nothing to lose match (well everything to lose but you know what I mean!), lets give it go…’

Billy Miller:

‘A scoreline that flattered the hosts.

We were the better team in the first half and deserved to lead.

But all four goals conceded were poor defensively, especially the second. We were all at sea for that one and it seemed to knock our confidence going in behind at half time.

We never fully recovered but we need to replicate the PSG performance and the first 35 mins of this one in our upcoming raft of away matches.

Tough to see Ekitike put a brace past us. Where would we be if we’d managed to secure him this summer?’

Matt Busby said…:

‘What is it about Anfield and us?

We took the game to the Scousers and for large parts were the better team, yet came off the park with a chastening 4-1 reverse.

Some poor defending tonight and after that run of 3 consecutive wins in the Premier League, it’s now a draw and 2 defeats in our last 3. We’re back in mid-table and I fear our short lived assault on the top five is over.

I’ll settle for 4-1 on Wednesday mind.’

David Punton:

‘Another season, another defeat at Anfield.

It’s like a curse. Are we ever going to win here? Seriously?

Other sides have had some joy at Liverpool this season.

We started this game well and failed to build on the lead given to us through Anthony Gordon.

We pretty much threw it away from there and the player that we tried to sign turned the game on its head.

A really bad night for us after a promising start. Not many positives.’

Jamie Smith:

‘Ugh. A really quality opening half hour and a deserved lead.

Undone by a player we tracked, bid for but couldn’t offer £250k a week for under PSR rules.

Second half was poor and you have to worry about the stamina of the squad for the horror run ahead.

I hope as and when the Man City tie dies (as soon as they score) there are full withdrawals to try and reboot for the next winnable game.

We never get anything here anyway but 4-1 felt very flat.’

GToon:

‘And people question me for saying I’m sick of this season.

This is becoming a bit tedious now.

I’m sick of saying the same thing.

Knee jerk reactions don’t last a season.

For those people who think our league form is good and results like this are expected, acceptable etc etc I’m pleased for you.’
