January 23 – FIFA president Gianni Infantino has pledged FIFA’s full support to US president Donald Trump’s new Board of Peace.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Infantino said: “FIFA gives its full support to President Trump and all members of the Board of Peace. We must support peace. We must unite people.”
On Thursday, Trump launched his board of peace, purported to promote peace and set Gaza’s future. Infantino attended the signing. In recent months, Trump has withdrawn the United States from major international cooperation agreements and organisations and he threatened to take control of Greenland before tracking back somewhat in a speech in Davos.
However, Infantino’s admiration for the American president remains unaltered. A number of the countries on Trump’s board of peace also have links to the FIFA President, including Saudi Arabia. Russia, Egypt and Israel are also mentioned as possible participants in the council. They share non-democratic ideals.
The United Arab Emirates also signed up to Trump’s board. Manchester City chairman and head of the City Football Group, Khaldoon Al-Mubarak, represented the Gulf nation.
While football officials in Europe reportedly were concerned about Trump’s desire to annex Greenland, no official has gone on record to criticise Infantino’s enduring embrace of Trump and the MAGA movement.
Infantino cheerleading for the board of peace leaves FIFA in an awkward position.
The Trump-led Board of Peace is seen as an attack on the United Nations and the international post-war order. However, after the World Cup in Qatar, as part of the $50 million dollar legacy fund, FIFA signed partnerships with two UN agencies – the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNHCR.
Trump completed the US’s withdrawal from WHO earlier today, reportedly owing the organisation $130 million.
