Infantino says FIFA coin under review at Trumps’ Mar-a-Lago crypto promo

February 23 – FIFA president Gianni Infantino has again floated the idea of world football launching its own cryptocurrency, telling an audience in Florida that the organisation is studying the creation of a ‘FIFA token’ or ‘FIFA coin’.

Infantino was speaking at the World Liberty Forum hosted at Mar-a-Lago, the private residence of friend and US President Donald Trump, when he outlined the concept.

“We are also studying the development of a FIFA token and a FIFA coin – a real potential global currency serving six billion football fans worldwide,” Infantino said.

It is not the first time the FIFA president has publicly linked football’s governing body with crypto ambitions. He previously referenced the idea during an appearance at a White House crypto summit last year, although no formal roadmap or timeline has been presented to date.

The proposal is viewed as exploratory rather than imminent, particularly given the volatility that continues to surround the digital asset sector.

The Mar-a-Lago event was part-hosted by his sons Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. , which was also a showcase for the Trump family’s own crypto initiative World Liberty Financial.

Infantino’s latest Trump family appearance has drawn scrutiny for its political optics. The International Olympic Committee confirmed it will take no action against Infantino – an IOC member – following questions over a potential breach of political neutrality rules tied to FIFA’s consistent and unapologetic engagement with initiatives associated with Trump.

In a brief statement, the IOC said the matter is closed and that FIFA’s development activity in Gaza falls within the remit of an international sports federation. But no mention was made of the FIFA cryptocurrency with speculation rife that FIFA will be partnering with Trump and his family on its launch.

Infantino’s presence in Palm Beach came against a tense backdrop. Just days later, an armed individual was fatally shot by Secret Service agents following a breach of the same property in Mar-a-Lago.

Regardless, the headline remains the same: FIFA, who are already navigating the most complicated World Cup operation in history, are now openly examining whether digital currency could form part of its future ecosystem. Whether that evolves into a tangible product – or remains as rhetorical and political positioning – is, for now, unclear.
