Icon’s Casting in Taylor Sheridan Crime Series Made Sylvester Stallone Fear for His Tog Dog Status

Icon’s Casting in Taylor Sheridan Crime Series Made Sylvester Stallone Fear for His Tog Dog Status

Sylvester Stallone doesn’t seem like he is the kind of guy that can be threatened or intimidated by many people. However, that was exactly what happened when the Rocky star found out that he was going to be joined by another cinema legend in his Taylor Sheridan series, Tulsa King. That person was Samuel L. Jackson, but it turns out Stallone’s fears of being overtaken as top dog on the mob series were unfounded.

Taylor Sheridan’s Tulsa King is currently in its third season and, despite some diminishing review returns, continues to be a strong performer on Paramount+. A fourth season has already been greenlit and a new spinoff, NOLA King, is also on the way. This is where Jackson comes in, as he will be the main lead in the new series. While speaking to People, Stallone addressed how what could have been an awkward casting choice turned out absolutely fine. He said:

“I went, ‘This is gonna be a fistfight. This is gonna be a battle.’ Like two boxers in a ring: Who is gonna throw the first punch? So, you’re getting nervous because you’re dealing with serious competition. But now we’re good. We’re flowing. We could do a show called ‘Tulsa King and Buddy.’ We worked well together.”

Taylor Sheridan Cannot Stop Making Spinoffs

Forget Tulsa King and NOLA King, Taylor Sheridan is the undisputed Paramount King right now. Although, for the first time in months, only one of Sheridan’s shows is currently in the streaming Top 10 in the U.S., on the global chart, he continues to be a dominant force. Tulsa King is the number one show on that chart, with Yellowstone still drawing huge audiences in third, Lioness in sixth, and several others frequently swapping in and out of tenth place.

While Sheridan’s original flagship series, Yellowstone, has ended, several spinoffs have been followed by…more spinoffs. The Dutton Ranch, Y: Marshals, The Madison, 6666, and 1944, are all in some phase of development, with the former two moving along quickly. Now it looks like Sheridan is starting to do the same with some of his other shows, and Tulsa King is the first to expand its reach to a new location.

NOLA King will see the Tulsa King universe shifting focus on Jackson’s Russell Lee Washington Jr. and pick up his story after his several appearances in Stallone’s show, when he leaves to become the head of a New Orleans-based crime syndicate. The logline for the new show reads:

“NOLA King follows Russell Lee Washington Jr. (Jackson) who, after befriending Dwight Manfredi (Stallone) during a 10-year stint in federal prison, is sent to Tulsa by New York’s Renzetti crime family to take Dwight out once and for all. Inspired by what Dwight created in Tulsa and impressed with the possibilities of second chances, Washington returns to New Orleans, the home he abandoned 42 years ago, to rekindle his relationship with his family, friends, and to take control of the city he left behind. In so doing, he incurs the wrath of his former employers in New York and makes himself vulnerable to old NOLA foes, both criminal and cop.”

NOLA King is expected to begin filming early in 2026, which could mean the series will debut before the end of the year.
