Hugh Jackman is proving to be a real diamond on VOD…Neil Diamond that is. The Aussie actor slips into the spangly costumes of a singer in a tribute band to the musical legend behind such hits as “Sweet Caroline” and “Forever in Blue Jeans” in a new true-life story, Song Sung Blue. Now, less than a month after the film debuted in cinemas, it has already shot straight to the top of the Amazon Store’s VOD chart.
Starring alongside Kate Hudson, Jackson completely embodies Diamond’s presence and stage persona as a down-on-his-luck musician, Mike Sardina, who forms a Neil Diamond tribute act with Patsy Cline impersonator Claire. The movie charts the couple’s relationship through marriage, personal struggles, and the music of Diamond.
Although Jackman is not playing Diamond in the movie, he could be, as he performs with all the nuance of the man himself, and performs all the tracks in the film himself with an admirable Diamond impression. That helped the film to a $48 million result at the box office, although with a $30 million budget it still has to break even. With its huge debut on VOD services, it seems that Song Sung Blue is hitting all the right notes with home audiences.
‘Song Sung Blue’ is a Near-Perfect Performance from Jackman and Hudson
Hugh Jackman is one of the most popular actors working in Hollywood right now. As well as returning to his popular Marvel role of Wolverine in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, the actor has been in some incredibly successful movies in the last decade, such as the ultimate slow-burn success story that was The Greatest Showman.
Recently, Jackman has been appearing on stage in his own musical extravaganza, and his vocal abilities have never been in question, making him the perfect candidate to lead a movie like Song Sung Blue, and together with the equally talented Hudson, the collaboration has resulted in one of the best rated movies of both actors’ recent work. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds a 97% audience score, with words like “outstanding performances,” “Oscar worthy,” and “absolutely stellar” appearing in several reviews.
Featuring a collection of Neil Diamond’s greatest hits, any fans of the singer will have an extra reason to tune in and check out Song Sung Blue now that is available at home on VOD services, including Amazon and Apple TV Store. However, it seems that even if you just come for the music, you will be swept away by the performances of the film’s two leads at the top of their game.
