Eddie Howe has commented on the “huge blow” his side have been dealt following Dan Burn’s fifth yellow card of the season and subsequent suspension.
Burn was controversially carded in last Sunday’s 3-1 win against Nottingham Forest, with it coming just seconds after Forest captain Ryan Yates escaped any punishment for a nasty elbow on Tino Livramento.
“It’s very rare you see me run to the fourth official.” said the gaffer. “But I thought Tino had been elbowed in the face and it was a clear free-kick, wasn’t given, and Dan paid the price for that really.”
The incident took Burn to five cards in 11 games, resulting in the defender being suspended for the first game back after the international break: a home clash against West Ham a week on Monday. However, Burn isn’t the only Mag who was close to a suspension, with the pair of Joelinton and Fabian Schar both on four yellows and one booking away from the
On Burn’s ban and the two others at risk, Howe said: “We knew we were going to lose Dan at some stage, and potentially Fab and Joey are in the same position. I’m probably pleased we’re not losing them all at the same time. It will be a huge blow to lose Dan, he’s done very well this season.”
Both Schar and Joelinton sit on four yellow cards, with another eight league games to come before the yellow cards ‘reset’ and a 10-yellow rule comes into play.
Fans will be hoping the Swiss and Brazilian stars will both following in the footsteps of Bruno Guimaraes last season, who somehow avoided a two-game ban despite playing a large chunk of the season just a single card away from suspension.
