Howe issues injury update on 4 Newcastle players ahead of Wolves clash

Starting with Fabian Schar, the boss confirmed that surgery on his ankle ligament injury was a success on Thursday, but it will be a long-term injury, with the 34-year-old set to be absent for three months.

Jacob Murphy’s latest scan on a hamstring issue showed no injury once again. However, a ‘period of rest’ will now be required for the winger, who was forced off just before the break in Tuesday’s cup defeat to Man City.

Now to the good news, as it sounds like Dan Burn and Will Osula are edging closer to comebacks.

Osula is due back in training ‘imminently’ after an ongoing foot injury marred his final months of 2025, while Burn is back running and OK from a fitness perspective, with pain management the key to his return at this stage after stepping up his recovery from a broken rib and punctured lung.

Howe on Fabian Schar

“He had a successful surgery yesterday which is great news. Everything went according to plan.

“It’s difficult to give a definitive but I think around three months out will be the diagnosis we’ll work towards. If it’s any quicker then great, but we need to give Fabian time to recover.”

Howe on Jacob Murphy

“Jacob has had another scan and again, nothing is showing which is a strange one. You have to go on the symptoms and how the player feels.

“That’ll probably mean a period that Jacob has to come out. How long, I don’t know but we’re thankful it’s not a serious problem and hopefully one we can overcome quickly.”

Howe on Will Osula and Dan Burn

“They’re both getting closer. Will hopefully will be training imminently, we’ll then have to make a decision on when we can involve him in a matchday squad.

Dan is improving, he’s running which is a really good thing. His fitness will be OK, it will just be managing the pain of his injury.”
