The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 has received a high-flying update that is sure to send excitement soaring for fans of the fantasy adventure franchise. The sequel to the 2025 smash hit, starring Mason Thames and Nico Parker as Hiccup and Astrid, respectively, has taken a major stride forward in its journey towards the big screen, putting it on target to meet its theatrical release date of June 11, 2027.
Dean DeBlois, who wrote and co-helmed the first How to Train Your Dragon film of the DreamWorks animated trilogy with Chris Sanders before taking over as sole director for its sequels and last year’s live-action adaptation, is returning once again to lead the charge on the second remake, serving as both its writer and director. He took to Instagram this week to confirm that filming is now underway on the next chapter of the dragon saga. “Back in the saddle!” he declared in the caption of the post, which included a behind-the-scenes photo of him holding a clapperboard. “Day 1 of principal photography on HTTYD2! The adventure begins.”
