A24’s pitch black comedy thriller How to Make a Killing has received its first wave of reactions ahead of its release, with critics lauding Glen Powell‘s lead performance in the “twisted” feature as “one of his best” yet. The actor has strengthened his star power in recent years by starring in blockbuster hits like Top Gun: Maverick, delivering charming turns in rom-coms like Anyone But You, and securing headlining roles in action-thrillers like Twisters and, more recently, Edgar Wright’s remake of The Running Man, but his latest role is attracting significant acclaim as a solid showcase of his “astonishingly twisted and magnetic charisma.”
Powell stars in How to Make a Killing as Becket Redfellow, a blue-collar man who was disowned at birth by his obscenely wealthy family, but will now stop at nothing to reclaim his massive $28 billion inheritance, no matter how many estranged relatives stand in his way. It is a substantial sidestep from his traditional leading man roles, as this time, he is playing a cold-blooded anti-hero rather than a virtuous protagonist. However, he seems to have won over a few fans, including Matt Neglia, who called Powell “a devilishly charming” lead, adding that he “grounds the film amid its absurdity with his charisma and ever likable screen presence.”
