Pokémon Legends: Z-A is once again tasking players with hunting for precious stones, but in true Pokémon fashion, not all of them do the same thing. While there are evolution stones (as is customary since the first generation), there’s also individual Mega stones, which became a key mechanic in later Pokémon entries.
After you choose your starter, it’s time to try to catch them all. This time, our old pal Gengar is back, and is capable of a Mega Evolution into Mega Gengar. You’ll need to progress a bit with the story to find one, but thankfully, after that, it’s pretty smooth sailing.
How To Get Gengar In Pokémon Legends: Z-A
You Can Trade Haunter Again
The old-fashioned way involves finding a Gastly. Gastly can first be encountered in Wild Zone 4, which is available near the start of the game. It’s one of the initial Wild Zones you’ll uncover in Lumiose City, and can be found on the northern end of Lumiose. Catch one, and then level it up to evolve it into a Haunter.
As a reminder, a Gengar needs to be level 25 to turn it into a Haunter. If it’s already level 25 or above, you need to level it up again, and then let the evolution sequence play out in the Pokémon party menu.
Then, any first-generation fan knows what to do next. You’ll have to trade your Haunter to someone to evolve it into a Gengar, then get it back. Alternatively, you can also get a Haunter from someone as a gift, which will then permanently evolve into a Gengar. Now all you need is the stone!
How To Get Gengar In Legends: Z-A Without Trading
When enemies get roughly level 42 in the D-rank portion of the story (on Main Mission 20), you’ll encounter a Gengar as part of the narrative. You can catch it directly there, avoiding the need to trade your Haunter to someone else. This is during the “A Request From The Rust Syndicate” questline, in the “rundown old building.”
Where To Find Gengarite For Mega Gengar In Legends: Z-A
It’s Easy To Locate
To purchase the Gengarite to trigger the Mega Gengar transformation, you’ll need to visit the Stone Emporium on Vernal Avenue. You may remember this exact same shop from Pokémon X and Y, which also offered various transformation stones to players 12 years ago.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A has some hidden info and a lot of Mega Evolutions to balance, but since most of the game takes place in Lumiose City, it’s much easier to acclimate to the environment than a sprawling open world that takes place in the greater Kalos region.
