Horror Director Zach Cregger Has Plans for a Second Film

Weapons, one of the highest-rated horror movies of the year, is now playing in theaters, and even though it is just heading into its opening weekend at the box office, a surprise sequel to the buzzy big-screen feature could be in the pipeline. Zach Cregger has revealed that he has an idea for another story set in the same world as his latest film, which is only his second as a solo director, following his 2022 breakout hit Barbarian. However, fans shouldn’t expect a Weapons sequel anytime soon, as it is not a project he is planning to pursue right away.

The director’s highly anticipated follow-up to Barbarian sees him exploring similar territory by tapping into the evils of suburbia, as a class of children mysteriously vanish one night at exactly the same time. The film delves deep into the mystery, but moviegoers might still be left wondering whether the story stops there. In a recent interview, Variety quizzed Cregger on whether there would ever be a sequel to Weapons in the future. And by the sounds of it, there is a high chance that he will be returning to that world again, as he told the outlet:

“It’s funny you asked that. I can’t help it: I have another idea for something in this world that I’m kind of excited about. I’m not going to do it next, and I probably won’t do it after my next movie, but I do have one, and I’d like to see it on the screen one day.”

Hype for Weapons reached an all-time high ahead of its release, thanks to the film’s viral marketing campaign, intriguing teasers and trailers, as well as its all-star cast led by Julia Garner and Josh Brolin. The movie has also garnered widespread critical acclaim, as evidenced by its 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with some reviewers believing that it cements Cregger’s status as a master of horror. If the positive reception pairs up with a strong box office performance, then the likelihood of a sequel getting greenlit will increase.

What’s Next for Zach Cregger?

Warner Bros. Pictures

Cregger has a few other projects to work on before thinking about a potential Weapons sequel. At the top of the pile is a new live-action Resident Evil movie, which is slated for release on Sept. 18, 2026, making it a top priority for the director. He plans on taking the iconic franchise back to its horror roots by telling a new story that “feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.” His take will likely tilt more towards suspense and scares over action, which will no doubt please fans of the horror video game series.
