One of the best horror movies of the year, Heretic, is ready to scare up even more followers now that the horror film is available on VOD through the usual platforms, including Amazon, YouTube, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home, formerly Vudu. Hugh Grant’s performance as the conniving Mr. Reed is well worth the cost of renting ($19.99) or owning ($24.99) the must-see movie alone, and directors Bryan Woods and Scott Beck’s collaboration made good at not only the box office, but with theatergoers and critics alike.
Since beginning its theatrical run on Nov. 8, Heretic has made $27.5 million domestically and an additional $13.2 million overseas for a worldwide total of $40.7 million (per The Numbers). And with a reported budget under $10 million, the box office hit quadrupled its production cost. Meanwhile, while the majority of horror films don’t usually impress the critics, they were bowled over by A24’s gripping macabre project.
Heretic currently registers 91% on the Tomatometer against 251 reviews posted to Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to the majority of critics’ strong reviews. And MovieWeb’s own Murjani Rawls gave the film a score of 3.5 out 5 stars, while praising Grant’s performance as “tailor-made.” Rawls writes:
“For Grant himself, the role of Mr. Reed feels tailor-made for him. He’s able to chew through a lot of dense exposition and information in a pseudo-sarcastic way, keeping you entertained and wanting more. There’s a specific point in Mr. Reed’s diatribe when he connects Monopoly, fast food, and The Hollies’ 1974 hit ‘The Air That I Breathe’ into an argument about religion.”

Golden Globe winner Hugh Grant (Best Actor | Four Weddings and a Funeral) is obviously best-known for his portrayal of romantic leads in films like Bridget Jones’s Diary, Love Actually, and Notting Hill, but don’t be fooled. The acclaimed actor is skilled at slipping in and out of any role, and he put a tremendous amount of work into portraying the devious Mr. Reed in Heretic. Grant said in an interview with GamesRadar+:
“This is what I do now: I go through the script with an extraordinary tooth comb, over and over again. Why does he do that? Why does he say that? The answer to each question suggests something about him and his past, and that mushrooms into a full biography, which I have all typed out on my computer, about his relationship with his parents, his siblings…
What happened at school? What traumatic things have happened, and what hurt him in this particular case to become the monster that he is now? I think it’s very important that the audience can kind of smell the damage inside him. Otherwise, there’s a danger that you just become a pantomime villain, but if they can smell there’s a suffering person in there, then they’re more interesting.”
