Following Henry Cavill‘s first look image from his Highlander remake last week, those sneaky set-leakers that lurk around London, England, have been working their magic to capture footage of Cavill filming near Tower Bridge with costar Jeremy Irons. This gives another great tease of what fans of the Highlander franchise can expect from the highly anticipated new immortal battle to be the One.
The new Highlander reboot from John Wick director Chad Stahelski was originally set to film last year, but needed to be delayed when Cavill was sidelined after being injured while training for the fantasy action role. Although some delays can cause scheduling problems, Highlander seemed to avoid too much disruption, and with filming clearly now in full swing, it seems likely that a 2027 release day could still be on the cards.
The new images and video show Cavill as Connor MacLoed, riding a motorbike, and standing in the rain with Jeremy Irons, who is set to play the leader of a shadowy secret order called The Watchers, a group that see immortals as a threat to humanity. ‘Highlander’ Has Assembled a Huge Cast
The Highlander franchise began in 1986, with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery leading the action-fantasy. While a bunch of lesser sequels, and a TV series, followed, Cavill’s new take on the story seems like it will be pretty much following the same story of the fight to win the “Prize,” which becomes a “battle for humanity’s soul.” The synopsis for the movie reads:
“Centuries after his first death on a Scottish battlefield, immortal warrior Connor MacLeod lives quietly in the modern world, haunted by loss and the endless cycle of violence among his kind. When the ruthless immortal Kurgan resurfaces, backed by a secret organization bent on unlocking the secret of eternal life, Connor is forced back into the Game – an ancient battle where ‘there can be only one.’
“Guided by his mentor Ramírez and a mortal ally, archaeologist Kate Bennett, Connor must confront his past and rediscover his purpose. As immortals clash across time and continents, the fight for the mysterious ‘Prize’ becomes a battle for humanity’s soul.”
This time around, Cavill plays Connor MacLoed, while Russell Crowe takes on the role of his mentor Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez. In addition to this, Dave Bautista takes on Clancy Brown’s old role of The Kurgan, while the rest of the main cast is made up of Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Drew McIntyre, Jeremy Irons, Max Zhang, Siobhan Cullen, Jeon Jong-seo, and Kevin McKidd.
A remake of Highlander has been discussed for almost two decades, since it was originally floated in 2008 with Justin Lin and Neal H. Moritz set to direct. Like many other movies, things did not quite pan out for that iteration, and it would be several directors and almost a decade later that Stahelski’s name would be linked to the project in 2016. Cavill was cast in the lead role in 2021, after other stars, such as Ryan Reynolds, had been linked to the role but dropped out. By the end of 2023, a script was in place, and the movie finally began moving forward at speed. With filming finally underway, fans can rest safe in the knowledge that the eternal wait for this reboot will soon be done. Prepare for another kind of magic coming to cinemas next year.
