Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Landman episodes 1 & 2!Landman star Mark Collie explains how Sheriff Walt Joeburg’s role in the series will grow following episode 1’s explosive opening scene. The Taylor Sheridan-created TV show begins with oil company crisis executive Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton) present as a plane from his oil company stolen by a dug cartel, crash-lands on their private roads, engulfing a tractor-trailer in flames. Joeburg (Collie) arrives on the scene, explaining how the event means law enforcement will need to keep an eye on the company moving forward. This could cause problems for Tommy, who’d overlooked stolen equipment in the business before.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Collie explained how his Sheriff Joeburg is close with Tommy, meaning he’s willing to help him out despite Landman‘s explosive start. However, the actor teases how the problems are going to build on top of one another, becoming “more exciting and more dangerous” as the series continues. He also expressed interest in continuing the series through season 2, indicating just how big some major events are going to be. Check out what Collie had to say below:

Well, anytime something blows up, or somebody finds a body, they call Walt. [Laughs] But ultimately, the character is important to the family. He and Tommy, obviously, you could probably garner that they’re close. They’re closer than most businessmen and Sheriff departments, you know, and Walt tries to be as accommodating, and he tries to cover Tommy’s a** when he has to. But the thing of it is that’s going to grow, and it’s going to get more exciting and more dangerous. I’d love to tell you all about it, but then I’d probably get fired. I want to make season 2, so I’m just going to leave it at that, stay tuned. [Laughs]

More Major Events Will Require His Intervention

The plane crash isn’t the only explosive event to happen in the first two episodes, as episode 1 ends with an oil rig explosion that results in the death of Tommy’s whole crew, save for his son, Cooper (Jacob Lofland). Landman episode 2 ends with the protagonist realizing the legal issues he’s now going to have for both incidents, despite previously confiding in Joeburg about how often equipment goes missing. It’s clear him and the Sheriff are on friendly terms, but with the two deadly incidents happening side-by-side, he’ll be under scrutiny he can’t avoid.

While it seems out of all the characters in Landman, Joeburg will be an important ally for Tommy, his job necessitates holding people accountable for potential criminal incidents. Since the crisis executive was supposed to be reporting stolen equipment this whole time, the larger legal ramifications from the event might not be something the Sheriff can protect him from. This is made all the more complicated by the tragic oil rig explosion, which puts both him and others in Texas’ oil industry, like Monty Miller (Jon Hamm), under a microscope.

Law Enforcement Is About To Get Even More Involved

While Joeburg is still an ally of Tommy’s despite the deadly incidents, he’s putting himself at risk by covering for him surrounding the stolen equipment and damage that ensued. Now that other legal entities will be after him for the oil rig explosion, it may limit how involved the Sheriff can actually get, backing him into a corner where he eventually has to take legal action against his friend. Since Landman still has eight episodes left, there will likely be plenty of wild events that unfold, leading to increased tension between the pair.
