The way Henry Cavill made his exit as the leading man of Netflix’s The Witcher was a heavily documented affair, and it largely came down to how the live-action adaptation of the source material was handled. Originally a series of books by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher has been changed to suit many different forms of media, including a video game franchise. However, it was arguably the Netflix project that brought the fantasy saga to the apex of its prominence within popular culture. Cavill’s casting as Geralt of Rivia was widely praised when the show premiered in 2019, and the actor’s outspoken love for the source material had the fan base worked up into an excited frenzy.
Unfortunately, the Netflix adaptation started strong but gradually moved away from Sapkowski’s source material. The various alterations were admonished by both fans and Cavill himself. The tension between The Witcher‘s leading man and the show’s writers manifested in Cavill eventually stepping down as Geralt, with Liam Hemsworth taking his place from Season 4. Now, the project that once held such potential is limping along to its fifth and final season later this year. Thankfully, another upcoming Cavill-led project will give him a shot at a more faithful adaptation.
Amazon’s ‘Warhammer 40,000’ Show Has Already Learned From Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ Mistakes
Most known as a tabletop RPG franchise, Warhammer has also branched out into comic books, video games, and other forms of media. Just as Cavill is an outspoken fan of The Witcher, he hasn’t been coy about his love for Warhammer 40,000 either. Although the actor has severed ties with The Witcher, he’s gearing up to star in a live-action Warhammer series on Prime Video. What’s even more exciting is that Cavill’s direct involvement goes beyond just starring in the upcoming adaptation.
He’ll also serve as an executive producer, so his love and knowledge of the Warhammer franchise will have even more of an influence on his upcoming show. Given how the Netflix show nosedived without Cavill, Amazon would be foolish not to embrace the actor’s Warhammer expertise and passion when making the show. It won’t change what happened to The Witcher, but at least Cavill’s views are far less likely to be ignored during similar scenarios.
‘Warhammer 40,000’ Can Make up for Another Sudden End to An Iconic Henry Cavill Role
When many fans think of Henry Cavill, they still see him in the famous blue and red Superman costume. After debuting in 2013’s Man of Steel, Cavill reprised his DC role in a few other Snyderverse projects. His final appearance arrived as a cameo in the closing moments of 2022’s Black Adam. It had been half a decade since his previous appearance as the Kryptonian, but the brief scene was a clear attempt at setting up a proper comeback.
Then, just a few weeks after Black Adam‘s premiere, the Snyderverse was scrapped when James Gunn was hired to reboot the ailing DC cinematic universe. Cavill was informed that the character would be recast for the new era at pretty much the same time he stepped down from The Witcher. He had gone from having a major role in two huge franchises to zero in almost no time at all. What’s even worse is that he didn’t get to bring either character’s arc to a satisfying conclusion. Hopefully, Warhammer 40,000 is a hit, and Cavill finally gets to tell a faithful adaptation of a story he’s passionate about from start to finish.
