April 4 – Hawk-Eye Innovations, the company responsible for the VAR system in the Bulgarian championship efbet Liga, has launched an internal investigation after an incident with one of its VAR operators during the match between CSKA Sofia and Lokomotiv Sofia on Wednesday.
Before the start of the match, which was played at Vasil Levski Stadium, television cameras filmed how the operator appeared to be browsing a football betting site on his personal smartphone.
In a letter to the Bulgarian Football Union, Hawk-Eye Innovations specified that the employee in question has been suspended from his position until the case is clarified.
“Hawk-Eye Innovations acknowledges with regret an incident involving one of its VAR operators during the Parva Liga match between PFC CSKA-Sofia and PFC Lokomotiv Sofia yesterday evening (2nd April 2025),” Hawk-Eye Innovations wrote to the BFU.
“Live footage from the camera situation in the VAR operations room documented the individual utilising a personal smartphone during the match and appearing to engage in inappropriate activities which would constitute gross misconduct in relation to the responsibilities of their assigned role.”
Hawk-Eye said it understood the severity of the incident, and “has launched an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter, with the individual in question immediately suspended from all activity whilst this is on-going. If the individual has been found to have been engaging in such inappropriate activity, we will look to dismiss the individual in accordance with their contractual terms.”
“Hawk-Eye fully recognises the necessity for its personnel to act at all times with the highest levels of professionalism and integrity in its trusted position working with the Bulgarian Football Union and other customers, and the company has strong policies in place that explicitly forbid its employees and contractors from engaging in any betting activity in any sports or competitions where it provides officiating services,” the letter continued.
“As a long-established partner of the Bulgarian Football Union, with a demonstrable history of successful service provision, we remain committed to collaborating with you to ensure the integrity of VAR operations through rigorous training programmes and the strict enforcement of compliance protocols for all personnel involved” added frоm the company in its official letter to Bulgarian Football Union.”
