The anticipated, and controversial, Harry Potter series might finally have a release window. Rumors of a Harry Potter series first emerged in 2021, but in 2023, it was officially confirmed that a new take on the iconic boy wizard was in development at HBO Max, with each season intended to adapt one of the seven books. The series is being overseen by showrunner Francesca Gardiner (His Dark Materials) and director Mark Mylod (The Menu), with Dominic McLaughlin set to play Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, told Deadline, “We’ve been saying 2027. I would say, to narrow it down to some extent, early 2027. And now you’re going to ask, does that mean January, February, March, April, that we’re not ready to say. I’ll say early 2027.” Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav had originally said the series would debut in 2026, though filming for Season 1 is still currently underway. Debuting in 2027 means Harry Potter will debut just in time for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone‘s 30th publication anniversary.
