‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die’ Goes Meta With AI Ticket Offer

A uniquely meta gesture has emerged via U.S. distributor Briarcliff Entertainment, which is offering free tickets for its new feature Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die to anybody that’s lost employment due to artificial intelligence. Directed by Gore Verbinski (who ruled himself out of any more Pirates of the Caribbean just recently), this sci-fi action-comedy finds a man from the future recruiting customers at a Los Angeles diner to help him fight against a sentient piece of tech. Sam Rockwell (The White Lotus), Juno Temple (Fargo), Michael Peña (End of Watch), Haley Lu Richardson (After Yang), Zazie Beetz (Joker), and Asim Chaudhry (Black Mirror) star.

Briarcliff Entertainment’s statement reads:

“To those who have lost their job to AI. On behalf of Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, the new film from director Gore Verbinski, Briarcliff Entertainment is offering you free tickets to see the movie in theaters — because we believe you should get something out of the AI ‘revolution’. If you or someone you know has been quietly replaced, sidelined, or optimized in the name of progress, tell us your story and receive a pair of tickets, on the house.”

The company’s CEO, Tom Ortenberg, added: “Who better to see a film about AI’s impact than those already experiencing it first hand?,” while eligible readers are urged to visit https://bit.ly/therevolutionstarts for more information. Somewhat surprisingly, this gift to ex-staff has divided people on social media, with one X user calling it “cynicism wrapped in generosity.” Two more wrote: “Love how they’re actually putting their money where their mouth is” and “This is well-intentioned, but also kinda dystopian. Free tickets don’t fix displacement — policy and reskilling do.” Alas, you can’t please everybody.

Thankfully, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die is a great excuse to visit theaters when it comes out on Friday, February 13. Based on 45 reviews at the time of publication, Verbinski’s Hollywood comeback is sitting on a handsome 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, and after those initial rave reactions out of last year’s Fantastic Fest, MovieWeb critic Mark Keizer wants everyone to “put down your phone and watch Sam Rockwell save the world.”

“Verbinski hasn’t directed a film since 2016’s A Cure for Wellness, depriving audiences of more delightful lunacy from one of modern cinema’s most distinctive big-budget filmmakers. With Good Luck… he seems to be making up for lost time. The film is an absurdist paradise, one that often threatens to derail due to the sheer number of off-the-wall ideas that Verbinski has little time or interest in making fully cohere. But he’s always saved by top-billed Rockwell. The Oscar-winner is in charming goofball mode, giving a manic performance that’s controlled enough that we believe a ragtag group of random Los Angelenos would aid in his near-hopeless mission.”
