Glen Powell’s 2024 Legacy Sequel With 91% RT Audience Score Becomes Streaming Hit

Glen Powell has quickly become one of the most in-demand movie stars working in Hollywood. Though he’s been a working actor for many years, a few select projects recently have pushed him to a new level of stardom. After smaller appearances in The Dark Knight Rises (2012), The Expendables 3 (2014), and Hidden Figures (2016), Powell was a clear highlight of 2022’s acclaimed Top Gun: Maverick as Hangman, and this paved the way for some exciting leading roles.

2023 was a big year for Powell. He notably appeared opposite Sydney Sweeney in Anyone But You, an R-rated romantic comedy that ended up becoming a surprise box office hit. Following that, he appeared in Hit Man, Netflix’s crowd-pleasing rom-com from Richard Linklater. He now has several anticipated projects on the horizon, including Edgar Wright’s The Running Man remake, and these titles only became more exciting after Powell lit up the screen earlier this year with a well-received legacy sequel.

Twisters has become a streaming success after its theatrical release earlier this year. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, the 2024 disaster flick serves as a legacy sequel to 1996’s Twister starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. The film follows retired tornado-chaser Kate Carter (Daisy Edgar-Jones) as she teams up with charismatic tornado influencer Tyler (Powell) to disrupt tornado activity in Oklahoma, and the result proved popular with audiences. Though Twisters‘ reviews were generally positive from critics, earning it a respectable 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film earned a glowing 91% from audiences.

New data from Reelgood now reveals that Twisters ranks as the fifth most popular title on streaming in the U.S. for the week of November 14 – 20. The film, which is streaming on Peacock, beats titles like Cross (2024–), Landman (2024–), and Emilia Pérez (2024), while falling short of The Day of the Jackal (2024–), My Old Ass (2024), Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), and, at number one, Yellowstone (2019–). Will Twisters Get A Sequel?

Though Twisters may have a glowing score on Rotten Tomatoes from audiences, it can’t be described as a box office smash hit. Made on an estimated budget of $155 million, the film grossed $371 million worldwide, proving very popular domestically but earning a soft $103 million from overseas territories. At that budget level, it was likely looking at a break-even point of between $310 million and $387.5 million, meaning it was a modest success at best.

Even though the movie is once again connecting with audiences on streaming and the Twisters ending leaves the door open for more adventures, these box office results could prevent a sequel from getting made. If another movie does happen, it would likely feature a smaller budget, but this could prove challenging given the effects-heavy nature of the premise. Even if another movie doesn’t happen, audiences are evidently enjoying revisiting Twisters now that it’s on streaming.
