George Clooney Hits Back After Trump Slams Him on Social Media

George Clooney got in a jab at Donald Trump by turning the President’s political slogan against him. Clooney is not only one of the most famous movie stars in the world but also one of Hollywood’s most outspoken liberals, speaking on behalf of multiple humanitarian crises and issues over the years. He has also been a vocal critic of Donald Trump in both of the President’s administrations.

On New Year’s Eve, Donald Trump posted to Truth Social, via Variety, celebrating the news that George Clooney and his wife, Amal Clooney, were granted French citizenship. Trump made reference to Clooney’s infamous New York Times op-ed on Joe Biden in 2024, which was seen as a major factor in the former president not seeking re-election, with his vice president, Kamala Harris, becoming the Democratic Party nominee in 2024. Trump said:

“Remember when Clooney, after the now infamous debate, dumped Joe during a fundraiser, only to go onto the side of another stellar candidate, Jamala(K!), who is now fighting it out with the worst governor in the Country, including Tim Waltz [sic], Gavin Newscum, for who is going to lead the Democrats to their future defeat. Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies. He wasn’t a movie star at all, he was just an average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Clooney responded to Trump’s claim, saying, “I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November.” Clooney is referring to the upcoming November 2026 midterm elections, where the Democrats could reclaim both the House and the Senate, which the Republicans currently control. Clooney’s response mixes the actor’s signature sarcastic wit, playing off Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan, but flips it to suggest that what would make America great is moving on from Trump.

The very fact that the President of the United States is picking arguments with movie stars certainly is not becoming of the high office, but is not shocking for this administration. Trump has made numerous calls for the cancellation of late-night talk show hosts who have been critical of him, like Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers. Trump even managed to criticize Rob Reiner after the iconic director’s death, in a move that even many of his supporters called out.

This isn’t even unique to Trump, as various members of his administration have also picked arguments with celebrities who dare criticize them. After musician Sabrina Carpenter called out the White House for using her song “Juno” in an ICE video by saying, “This video is evil and disgusting. Do not ever involve me or my music to benefit your inhumane agenda,” White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson chose to criticize the musician for expressing her First Amendment right and copyright claim on her song by using official government accounts to tweet out, “Here’s a Short ‘n Sweet message for Sabrina Carpenter: we won’t apologize for deporting dangerous criminal, illegal murderers, rapists, and pedophiles from our country. Anyone who would defend these sick monsters must be stupid, or is it slow?”

The 2026 mid-term elections will undoubtedly be important. The first year of Trump’s second term has been rife with controversy, from a massive increase in ICE raids to cuts to federal spending on food assistance, medical programs, and even PBS. Companies like Disney have cut LGBTQ+ stories from programs in fear of retaliation from the Trump administration. A lot will hang in the balance of the 2026 mid-term elections.
