Newcastle and Fulham are both aiming to return to winning ways in the Premier League when the sides meet at St James’ Park on Saturday.

The Magpies beat Benfica 3-0 at home in the Champions League on Tuesday but lost their last top-flight match 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion last Saturday.

Fulham’s 1-0 defeat at home to Arsenal on the same day was the Cottagers’ third consecutive defeat, leaving them three points above the relegation zone.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe

Newcastle lineup vs Fulham

Newcastle forward Yoane Wissa remains out with a knee injury. Right-back Harrison Ashby has a hamstring issue.

Sandro Tonali is on the bench after manager Eddie Howe had said the playmaker was being monitored. “He did train but wasn’t feeling 100%,” Howe said, describing the Italy international’s involvement as “touch and go.”

Howe makes one change by bringing in Joelinton for Jacob Ramsey, while full-backs Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall have returned to training following injuries.

Harvey Barnes is a substitute again, having scored twice in 14 minutes against Benfica after coming off the bench in the 63rd minute.

“The very best performance will be needed,” predicted Howe. “We know the qualities of [Fulham’s] team.

“These are difficult games for us, returning from a Champions League game. It is a mental challenge and we must rise to that.

“It is all down to our attitude, our mentality. Our attitude must be the same for every game. Our attitude against Benfica was very good, our will to win was there. That needs to be every game.”

Fulham lineup vs Newcastle

Fulham make six changes, with left-back Antonee Robinson, centre-half Joachim Andersen and wingers Samuel Chukwueze and Rodrigo Muniz out injured.

Forward Harry Wilson picked up a problem while representing Wales, but midfielders Sasa Lukic – a starter – and substitute Tom Cairney return.

Manager Marco Silva said Lukic’s response to suffering an injury had been “very good”. “Top professional, top guy,” added the Portuguese. “He takes care of himself in a top way.”

Silva praised Nick Woltemade’s impact since joining Newcastle for £69 million, including four goals in five Premier League appearances.

“He’s shown already that, inside the box, he can score in many different ways,” observed Silva. “He’s a very good one.

“[I like] the way sometimes he can be the extra midfielder and he’ll link their game and support them to beat the first pressure, for example. And inside the box, his profile is a very good one.”

Fulham starting XI: Bernd Leno, Kenny Tete, Issa Diop, Calvin Bassey, Ryan Sessegnon, Adama Traore, Sasa Lukic, Emile Smith Rowe, Sander Berge, Alex Iwobi, Raul Jimenez

Fulham substitutes: Benjamin Lecomte, Harrison Reed, Tom Cairney, Jorge Cuenca, Jonah Kusi-Asare, Timothy Castagne, Kevin, Josh King, Samuel Amissah
