Friday the 13th Prequel Series Crystal Lake Showcases Iconic Location

A Friday the 13th spinoff series has been announced as being in development, and now, new behind-the-scenes photos reveal the show’s location, which has been frequently depicted throughout the slasher franchise. The series, titled Crystal Lake, is a prequel to the Friday the 13th movies and is being developed by A24 for Peacock. Brad Caleb Kane is serving as the series showrunner.

Not many details are currently known about the plot for the prequel series, but it seems the show will act as a Jason Voorhees origin story of sorts. Prolific actress Linda Cardellini will portray Pamela Voorhees, while child actor Callum Vinson will appear as slasher icon Jason. William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch, and Phoenix Parnevik round out the rest of the cast.

In a post from Kane’s Instagram, he shared a photo of a sign that reads “Town of Crystal Lake, Established 1783.” Beyond the sign is a quaint town on a hill. This picture seems to have unveiled the location for Crystal Lake, even though, based on the title alone, there was already talk of the show taking place at the infamous camp in the small, dreamlike town.

In an Instagram story, Kane also revealed nighttime shots of the titular Crystal Lake with the captions “Night shoot. On the lake” and “Another Crystal clear night on the lake”. Check out the images below:

What This Means For The Crystal Lake Series

The series is said to have begun filming this past June. The photos from Kane’s Instagram story indicate the show will take place at Camp Crystal Lake. These images signal that the show will go back to the franchise’s roots and be a campside mystery-slasher story.

The original Friday the 13th was released on May 9, 1980, and spawned 11 sequels and spin-offs, including a remake.

The series is said to take place in 1970-1971, which even further clarifies the fact that the show will be a Camp Crystal Lake origin story. The show is said to be in production until at least November, and the series is expected to be released in 2026. It is not clear if the entire show will take place at Crystal Lake or if it will span multiple timelines and locations.

The latest Crystal Lake behind-the-scenes images shared by Kane on Instagram don’t reveal much, but they do reveal just enough about the series to encourage more excitement, and it seems like the series will feel like an in-canon Friday the 13th movie.

The fact that the show will take place at Crystal Lake is great news for fans. Jason went to space and hell, so it’s nice to see the slasher icon going back to his roots for his origin story.
