Former Man United scout backs Elliott summer exit at L4

Liverpool are said to be open to selling highly regarded midfielder Harvey Elliott in the upcoming summer transfer window if the Fulham academy graduate does not commit to a new contract at L4.

Elliott is a wonderful maestro, easy on the eyes with all his slick glides and passes as he operates in pockets; however, he has struggled with injuries and finds himself serving the sidelines every time he establishes himself in the first eleven. And the fact that the Reds do not have such a type of player in their roster makes him a valuable asset in the dressing room at Kirkby.

However, many would find it surprising for the Merseysiders to have their stance on a possible sale given how the 21-year-old attacking midfielder’s contract at Anfield doesn’t run out till 2027. Though it looks like the chiefs at Liverpool have learnt their lessons with all the drama going around the contracts of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, and rightly so, the Reds wouldn’t want a repeat of such a scenario.

And the Premier League heavyweights could look to maybe cash in on his services while they can maximise his value if the contract talks don’t progress till the off-season. This way Liverpool would get a suitable transfer fee that they can look to reinvest in Arne Slot’s squad.

Brown backs Harvey Elliott exit

Speaking about a possible Elliott summer exit, former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, said:

“Liverpool want to keep him. However, they might be open to selling if they can get a decent fee for him, which would allow them to go back into the transfer market and strengthen other areas of their team.

“If he doesn’t sign a new deal, they won’t want him to run down his contract like we’ve seen with Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold. There’s a lot of competition for places in his position, that’s the reason he hasn’t been in the side.

“They’ve got players like Mac Allister and Szoboszlai there. So letting him go and bringing in some good money might be something they look to do. He’s been a bit of a fringe player, but he’s still a very good option to have. You need those types of players in your squad who have the quality but can go in and out of the side. Whether he’ll be happy playing that role long-term will be up to him.“

At the moment the likes of Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, and Szoboszlai are ahead of the Chertsey-born midfielder in the roster at L4, and that could also prove critical in deciding his long-term future at Anfield Stadium.
