In the wake of Barcelona removing Marc-Andre ter Stegen from captaincy, the German international has come out with a statement, explaining his version of events.
In the statement, Ter Stegen confirmed that he is willing to work with Barcelona to mete out any friction and co-operate with the club.
The statement has drawn praise from many footballing personalities, including Barcelona’s former manager, Xavi Hernandez.
Xavi Hernandez’s comment on ter Stegen’s post
Xavi was swift to comment on Ter Stegen’s post on Instagram, where he released his detailed statement.
“Always exemplary,” Xavi wrote in the comment section, offering his applause to the German for deeply understanding the situation and vowing to work with the club.
Interestingly, though, Xavi deleted his comment shortly after and even removed the post like, which does raise suspicion as to whether or not he faced pressure to do so.
However, it is likely the case that Xavi, as a former Barcelona manager, did not want to involve himself in the drama surrounding Barcelona and Ter Stegen.
It must be noted that Xavi has worked with Ter Stegen twice, both as a player and as a manager.
During Ter Stegen’s first season at Barcelona in 2014/15, Xavi was one of the German’s teammates.
Xavi then returned as the Barcelona coach and worked with Ter Stegen between 2021 and 2024. Under the leadership of the Spanish manager, the 33-year-old ace featured in 121 competitive matches, keeping 56 clean sheets in the process.
Ter Stegen was notably one of Europe’s best-performing goalkeepers during the 2022/23 campaign.
