For Good’ Writer Addresses the Possibility of ‘Wicked 3’

Dana Fox is the co-writer of both Wicked and Wicked: For Good, working alongside Winnie Holzman, who wrote the original musical. Fox’s previous film credits include What Happens in Vegas, How to Be Single, Cruella, and The Lost City, but the two Wicked films are easily the biggest projects on her resume. Wicked grossed $758 million worldwide and was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, while For Good is looking to be one of the biggest movies of 2025.

Speaking with Deadline, Fox was asked about her thoughts on a potential Wicked 3. Though no official word on a third film has been made, Fox said, “I would be honored if anyone asked me to be a part of Wicked 3.” However, she is also comfortable leaving the series as just two complete movies, saying, “Sometimes I think the best things in life are the ones you want to take care of, like they’re the most delicate treasures. And sometimes that means not stepping on what’s very, very good.” However, she did offer some insight into what she (and her kids) would like a hypothetical Wicked follow-up to be, saying:

“I think that they are such beloved characters that seeing what they were up to, I mean, to me, the moment when Elphaba says in voiceover, ‘I know she can never know that we’re alive.’ I was like, somebody feels like they’re asking to find out that they are alive at some point. That feels really like, ‘Hello.’ That’s spicy to me. I love the idea that we could meet up with them again someday. My daughter personally wants a prequel, so I do what my kids say. I’m like, ‘Sure, prequel sounds great,’ but honestly, it would be an honor to be involved in any of it if it happened.”

Will Universal Pictures Turn ‘Wicked’ Into a Franchise?

Wicked and Wicked: For Good are both adaptations of the musical, with the first adapting Act I and the latter Act II. There are no more stage plays to adapt, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t more source material to draw from. The musical was based on the 1995 book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by author Gregory Maguire. Maguire wrote an entire series following the events of Wicked, which includes 2005’s Son of a Witch, 2008’s A Lion Among Men, and 2011’s Out of Oz. Maguire also wrote Tales Told in Oz in 2012, which explores the folklore of Oz and is a prequel to Elphaba’s childhood, titled Elphie: A Wicked Childhood, which was published in 2025.

If Universal Pictures wanted to expand Wicked into a full-blown franchise, they have the material to do so. With Colman Domingo voicing the Cowardly Lion, it provides a lead-in for an adaptation of A Lion Among Men. However, there would need to be some big changes given how the stage play made many alterations to the original book, which don’t align with the direction of the sequel books, particularly Son of a Witch, which follows Elphaba and Fiyero’s son Liir. There is also the fact that any future Wicked movies would require original songs since they would be adapted straight from page to screen, and delivering new songs that are meant to follow up on one of the most iconic musicals of all time is a daunting task.

The prospect of turning Wicked into a franchise must be enticing for Universal Pictures. Even changing Wicked: Part II to Wicked: For Good might have been an early indicator of potential long-term franchise building, with the Wicked title being added to future films, similar to The Twilight Saga or The Hunger Games. However, it begs the question if audiences are fully invested in this new take on The Wizard of Oz, or if the interest has soley been in the music and performances by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively.
